Macca has operation to clear up ankle problem

There was both good and bad news for Shrewsbury Town midfielder Dave McAllister as he looks to get back to fitness following his recent ankle problems.

Macca has been out of action since picking up an injury in the 2-1 win over Bradford City last March. It was found that he had a syndemosis tear, which is a high ankle sprain, and needed time to recover.

He is over this problem now but while the consultants were checking to see how well the recovery has been they found something else in the ankle which might have become a problem at a later date.

Town physio Chris Skitt was with Dave this morning as they waited for the popular Dubliner to have his operation.

He said: "Macca has recovered fully from the initial problem of syndemosis in the ankle and that is testimony to the hard work he’s put in during the rehabilitation.

“When they were checking the ankle they found something which may become a problem later in the season.

“With it being the close season we’ve taken the decision to have a routine operation to clear out the ankle and if we act now we will save time later in the season.

“The consultant is saying the recovery time will be four to six weeks and we hope Macca will be back for the start of pre-season.”

The news is another blow for Macca after he missed the final eight games of Town’s season.

But he is remaining positive and is hoping to be back in time for the important pre-season training programme that Micky Mellon will put his team through.

The former Sheffield United midfielder said: "It is a disappointment but it's good to get it sorted now and gives me the chance to come back raring to go.

“It is lucky that we can get it sorted over the summer ahead of the pre-season as it could have been a lot worse if it had happened in the season.

“With the new manager on board and the new signings being announced it is an exciting time to be at Shrewsbury Town.”
