Grandison leaves the club

Defender turns down new offer and contract expires

Graham Turner has revealed that defender Jermaine Grandison has left Shrewsbury Town after turning down the club's offer of a new contract.

The club will help Jermaine, currently sidelined with a hip injury, with his rehabilitation, but his time as a Shrewsbury player is now at an end.

"Unfortunately Jermaine, through his agent, turned down the offer that we had made him," said the manager.

"It looks as though he's going to be out for quite some time and we will be responsible for his medical well being, but unfortunately now as far as the relationship between Jermaine and the club, that's gone and Jermaine has departed.

"His contract finished at the end of June and so that's it.

"I was quite surprised at the reaction to our offer, that they turned it down given the circumstances.

"I know Jermaine was a big favourite of the supporters, but these things happen in football and Jermaine is no longer a Shrewsbury player."

Town will continue to help the player in his quest to regain fitness.

"We have to be responsible for ensuring he has the right appointments with the right people and some rehabilitation," said GT. "Through Chris Skitt, the club's physio, that will be organised."

Jermaine joined Town, initially on loan, from Coventry in January 2011 and was a regular in the team until being injured in January.

"We had written him off for six months anyway, hence the reason for bringing in reinforcements in terms of the centre of our defence," added the manager.

"Jermaine did well for the club but I think the club has done well for him. He was allowed to flourish, he was allowed to build up a reputation as being a good player, but unfortunately these things do happen.

"It won't be the first time in my career and it won't be the last that we've seen players depart for whatever circumstances.

"Jermaine has gone and the next one will step in his shoes."
