Reserves draw with Tranmere

4 March 2014

Young Town team shares the points thanks to goals form Ginnelly and Watkins

A young Shrewsbury Town reserve team were pegged back by a late equaliser as they picked up a point from a 2-2 draw with Tranmere Rovers this afternoon.

The Final Third Development League game was played at Lilleshall in order to protect the Greenhous Meadow pitch.

Goalkeeper Harry Lewis was handed his reserve team debut and Dom Smith, who also signed a professional contract at the Greenhous Meadow last week, lined up at the heart of the back four.

The rest of the team was made up of youth teamers with manager Mike Jackson deciding not to risk any members of his first team squad as there are seven more important League One matches to come this month.

A much more experienced Tranmere side took an early lead but Town recovered to lead 2-1 by half time.

Niall Flint and Dave Easthope combined well for Josh Ginnelly to equalise before Jeff Watkins powered home a header from a free kick.

Town looked like holding out until, just like at Oldham last week, they conceded a late equaliser with Jake Kirby scoring his second goal of the game.

The next reserve team game is at Wigan Athletic on Tuesday, March 18.

Town: Harry Lewis, Ryan Hickman, Ben Burton, Alex Fletcher, Jeff Watkins, Dom Smith, Scott Ryan (George Carpenter, 45), Niall Flint, Josh Ginnelly, Dave Easthope (Jack Richards 77), Matthew Jones (Sam Molyneux 45)

Subs: Alex Ashton
