First senior goal for Burke fails to mask JPT disappointment
Graham Burke struck his first senior goal against Oldham in the JPT, but the Aston Villa loanee was left feeling dejected after the 4-1 defeat at the Greenhous Meadow.
The 19-year-old striker was top-scorer in the NextGen Champions League last season as Villa won the competition, but his strike against the Latics represented his first in first-team action.
“I’m happy about scoring the goal, but I’m not too happy with the result,” said Burke.
“It’s pleasing, but the outcome of the game really wasn’t the best for us and we’re out of the competition too, so individually it was probably alright, but overall I won’t really take anything from it.
“We won’t get over it too quickly. We’ll still be thinking about it, but we just need to get a few days training in and hopefully the result will go out of our minds.”
Burke has been an unused substitute in Town’s last three League One fixtures, and after starting the Oldham clash, he revealed how he was glad to be back in action.
“I’ve been on the bench for three games without playing any minutes, so it was good for me to get a bit of game time today – and the goal came from it so we’ll have to see what happens next game, whether I sit on the bench again or whether I play, I don’t know.
“I think I got around 80 minutes so it’s good for me that it gets me a bit of match sharpness.”
Graham Turner targeted the competition as one he wanted to do well in, and Burke shares the managers disappointment at the first round exit, but insists the squad must recover and prepare right to be in good shape to take on Crawley on 14th September.
“At the start of the game he [GT] told us that he expected us to win it, but it wasn’t the right outcome, so I expect he’s pretty disappointed – and so are we.”
“We’ll be back in to work hard and we’ll look at some DVD’s and go over what went wrong and try and turn them into positives and to make sure that it doesn’t happen again.
“For the Crawley game we’re just going to have to prepare well in training and go out there and give it our best shot and hopefully we’ll come away with the win.”
