Reserves see off Wrexham

8 April 2014

Goals from Bradshaw (2), Flint, Anderson and Ginnelly give Town the win

Tom Bradshaw and young winger Josh Ginnelly both scored twice as Shrewsbury Town reserves beat Wrexham 5-3 in an exciting Final Third Development League this afternoon.

Town eased into a 3-0 lead early in the second half through Bradshaw (2) and Kaiman Anderson before Wrexham hit back to make it 3-3.

But Ginnelly then found the net twice to make sure of victory.

Town fielded a strong central defensive partnership in Dave Winfield and Jermaine Grandison, on the comeback trail from injury, but the only other man with first team experience on parade was striker Bradshaw.

After a tight opening 20 minutes, Town were first to threaten when Ginnelly's fine cross from the left was met by the head of Bradshaw, but keeper Louis Gray produced a smart save low to his left.

Strike partner Anderson then went even closer when he flicked the ball over Gray only to be denied by a goalline clearance from an alert defender.

The opening goal finally arrived in the 27th minute when Bradshaw neatly controlled a low free kick from Niall Flint and fired home from eight yards.

The Town front two combined well again just before the break when Anderson lifted the ball into Bradshaw's path but the Wales under-21 international's shot was well kept out by Gray.

Anderson always looked likely to get a goal and he did in the 44th minute when he capitalised on some poor defending to steer home Town's second.

Wrexham were close to pulling one back early in the second half but keeper Callum Burton did well to stop Reid's well struck shot.

Town stretched their lead to 3-0 in the 55th minute when Anderson's clever effort came back off the bar and Bradshaw was on hand to nod in the rebound.

Bradshaw nearly completed his hat-trick a minute later but was denied by the legs of keeper Gray.

Wrexham pulled one back when Reid, on loan from Wolves, beat Burton with a low shot from the edge of the area shortly before Grandison and Winfield made way having got a little more than an hour of action under their belts.

Ginnelly might have made it 4-1 when he lifted his shot over the bar with only the keeper to beat but instead it was quickly 3-2 when sub Richard Harvey-Davies tapped in after Burton initially kept out a shot from Danny Reynolds.

Wrexham pulled level at 3-3 15 minutes from time when Joe Williams flicked the ball over Burton.

Town were quickly back in front when Ginnelly confidently fired in Bradshaw's pull back from the right.

Town moved 5-3 ahead when Ginnelly's effort just crossed the line.

Bradshaw was close to completing his hat-trick in the closing stages but he cracked a powerful shot against the bar and Anderson was also denied by a fine save from Gray.

The game finished with Wrexham reduced to 10 men after a challenge on Dom Smith saw the ref reach straight for his red card.
