“I’d been hoping for an opportunity”

Doble pleased to get first team chance

By Matt Johnson

After earning his first start in Town colours since joining in the summer, Ryan Doble confessed an overriding feeling of disappointment that it ended in defeat at the hands of Sheffield United.

Restricted to a handful of substitute appearances, Doble has been waiting in the wings for his chance to impress and was given the nod from GT to start in the 2-1 home defeat to the Blades after Marvin Morgan was ruled out through injury.

“Yeah it’s been a long time coming,” said Doble. “I’ve been here since the pre-season and I’ve been working hard, got my head down and hoping to take my opportunity when it comes.

“It’s disappointing to lose. I think we started the game well and at periods we did well.  If we could’ve weathered the storm early in the second half, it could’ve been a different game and maybe we could’ve pinched a goal.”

The former Southampton trainee has had injury problems of his own – recently recovering from a fractured hand and admitted that he isn’t currently at the peak of his fitness.

“I haven’t had much game time recently. I’ve come back from a fractured hand, so I was just happy to be out there playing.

“I need to work on my fitness because I’m not match fit. I feel like I’ve been doing well in training and I’m happy to just get my chance and I’ll keep working hard and keep improving.”

After getting a taste of first team action, Doble is hoping to impress the gaffer this week in training to get the nod again at Tranmere on Friday.

“Of course I want to be involved, but the manager picks the team and I’ve just got to work hard during the week and see how it pans out really.”

Next up at the Meadow is a double-header with Stevenage and Doncaster Rovers (23 & 26 Feb). SNAP UP your tickets.
