Manager's thoughts ahead of Saturday's game
Manager Micky Mellon remains confident that Shrewsbury Town’s strikers can re-find their goal-scoring form - and could possibly use new forward Bobby Grant to help against Cheltenham Town on Saturday.Town take on the Robins, who currently sit tenth in the Sky Bet League 2 table, over the weekend (3pm kick-off).
Saturday’s opponents are just two points off the Play-Off places, although they have not won since narrowly overcoming Hartlepool United 1-0 on August 30.
Town have found goal-scoring a problem on the road recently, but Micky was quick to ensure that everything is being done to get them back on the goal-scoring trail.
“We have to just keep working hard and believing, we are a very confident group,” said Micky.
“All we are missing is that final pass or clinical finish. We know that and we’re working very hard to fix that.
“We can’t do anything about what has gone before but learn from it and try to fix it on the training ground, and then take those lessons onto the pitch.”
When talking about his new signing Grant, who has joined on loan from Blackpool, Micky spoke very highly of the youngster, insisting he could make a real impact and excite the supporters immediately.
“He plays in wide areas, and his goal-scoring record is one in three from wide areas in 150 odd games, so where very pleased to have him here.
“We just felt that in wide areas we needed more of a threat, and needed somebody who could also add to the goals that the strikers will bring.
“He is a player who, if we can get up to full speed very quickly, has a talent which will please the fans."
And Micky carried that positivity into speaking about his squad, but suggested they still need time to gel.
“It’s very much still a work in progress, this is a very new group who we are learning about all the time, and working with all the time,” he said.
“My goal is to win the next half of football we take part in and that is against Cheltenham on Saturday, and then we will keep trying to do that up to a stage where we feel we have to have a look at where we are."
Micky also confirmed that Andy Robinson is the only unavailable player for Town this weekend, with the winger still a few weeks away from returning to action due to a knee injury.
