Barnsley - Meet The Opposition

1 July 2015

We take a look at his season Sky Bet League 1 opposition

Barnsley finished 11th in Sky Bet league One last season and will be hoping for an improved campaign this time around. Here we take a closer look at the reds.

Name: Barnsley Football Club
Nickname: The Tykes
Stadium: Oakwell
Founded: 1887

Last season:
Barnsley finished the season with a five game unbeaten run but that wasn’t enough to earn the side a play-off berth. Danny Wilson was sacked by the club in February and Lee Johnson was appointed as his successor. He became Barnsley’s sixth manager in as many years.
The Tykes had a total of 62 points, with a +1 goal difference.
Conor Hourihane was the clubs top scorer, netting 13 goals in the league and one in the FA cup.

The Gaffer:
Lee Johnson became the third youngest manager in the football league when he was appointed in February at the age of 33. Johnson was a former professional footballer, playing for the likes of Brighton and Derby County.
His first managerial job was at Oldham Athletic in 2013 where he stayed until accepting the Barnsley hot seat in 2015.

Stadium:
Oakwell was built 128 years ago in 1887. The ground is primarily used by Barnsley Football Club. The stadium underwent a vast redevelopment from 1992 until 1999. It has a capacity of 23,287 which makes it the 42nd biggest football ground in England.

Past meetings:
Barnsley last played Shrewsbury in the league in 1989, where Barnsley were 1-0 winners.
Barnsley lead in the overall table against Shrewsbury, beating the Shrews 18 times and losing on only 11 occasions.
