Grant, "It was a massive result for us"

29 March 2015

Grant pleased with result and his two goals

Saturday's two-goal hero at Portsmouth Bobby Grant says the win at Fratton Park was up there with one of Shrewsbury Town's best results and performances of the season.
Grant struck in each half to earn an 8th away league win of the campaign and close the gap on leaders Burton to 2 points - the Brewers host Stevenage on Monday evening.
"It was a massive result for us," said Grant, on loan from Championship club Blackpool. "The manager touched on how important the game was in the hotel on Friday night and before the game when we woke up. I thought we were comfortable throughout, from start to finish. We controlled the tempo and we've got the quality in the dressing room for it to come together.
"Away from the home it was the best performance since I've been here. It was fantastic and I'd put it up there with the Bury game at home when we won 5-0. Portsmouth have got a great history and it's not an easy place to come and dominate the game the way we did. That shows the quality we've got. The gaffer is spot on where he said that was a complete performance."
Grant's brace took his goals tally up to 5 in the last 6 games with strikes also against Accrington and Cambridge United.
"I'm on a nice run of form," he admitted. "I've always said it'll come. The harder you work as a team the more chances you get as individuals. We could have had about 3 or 4 goals, we've had a lot of chances and the volley that I hit wide in the 2nd half I should have done better with.
"I'm delighted with my own form. I got left out recently because the manager felt I was tired which I totally agreed with. He's been proven right because as soon I've got back, the goals have started flying in. My fitness levels are back to what they're usually at. When you're playing in a team that's so comfortable, fit and good at dominating the ball, it makes the job a lot easier to do. Playing in that team against Portsmouth was very enjoyable."
Town, who remain 2nd in League 2, were backed by another impressive away following and Grant admitted the supporters can play a big part in the run-in.
"The fans are massive for us," he said. "They're the ones who will help us get promotion. It's about the team, the staff, the club but it's the fans who probably play the biggest part. The lads are very thankful for the support they give us. We know it's a long way to Portsmouth and hopefully we can repay them with a promotion."
4th placed Bury saw their match against Southend abandoned at Gigg Lane due to the wet weather, meaning Town have a 7 point lead over their promotion rivals.
"We've just got to keep winning and take care of ourselves," he said. "As a group we had a discussion about how we need to forget about the teams around us. If we focus on ourselves and getting the performances right, we won't have a problem. It'll be the others around us who are worried about what we're doing. We need to focus on the next game which is Dagenham on Friday.
"I don't think any of the lads have spoken about points targets or what we need to do. The manager and staff have kept us very grounded and that's the best way to go about it. We've got a very young squad who need to keep enjoying their football and keep producing performances like we did against Portsmouth. The gaffer doesn't put any pressure on us regarding promotion and that's very good man-management."
