Connor praise team for last minute Carlisle win
Defender Connor Goldson says his team deserved their stunning 2-1 win at Carlisle United on Tuesday night which put Shrewsbury back on top of League 2.Micky Mellon's side were a goal down going into second half stoppage time, but a header from Micky Demetriou and a James Collins thunderbolt - his 15th of the season - won the game in the most dramatic of circumstances.
"It's a massive result after Saturday's draw with Southend," said Goldson. "It was a hard game at a difficult place to come to on a Tuesday night but it puts up back to the top of the league. A few of the other sides around us have slipped up and we've got another home game on Saturday and hopefully we can get another 3 points."
Shrewsbury were below par in the 1st half and were thankful to goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler for a string of good saves. Town improved after the break and Goldson says they created enough chances to come away from Brunton Park with at least a draw.
"They had a lot of chances in the 1st half," he admitted. "In the second half Tyrone Barnett's had a volley, James Collins has been through 1-on-1, Scott Vernon had a chance as did Bobby Grant and Mark Ellis had a header cleared off the line. We had a lot of opportunities in the game so you can't say we didn't deserve it even thought we weren't at our best. When you go to places like Carlisle, it's about getting 3 points.
"Jayson was unbelievable in the 1st half and is getting better and better. He had to adjust to the league at the start of the season and credit to him for his performance at Carlisle where he kept us in the game."
Town return to the Greenhous Meadow on Saturday against AFC Wimbledon looking to maintain their unbeaten league home run. The two sides played each other on the opening day of the season with the match ending 2-2.
"We've improved since then," said Goldson. "When we're at home we feel we can beat anyone. People might think that's a bit arrogant but we've made the place a fortress this year and we want to make it 7 points from the 3 games this week."
Goldson also had sympathy for fellow defender Nathaniel Knight-Percival who has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to a cruciate knee ligament injury.
"I'm devastated for him," he said. "I've spoken to him a few times since it happened and we're all here for him. He's been one of the players of the season. We call him the Rolls Royce of defenders and I think he's too good for League 2. We're lucky to have a great centre-half on our hands and I'm sure he'll come back stronger."
