Gaffer On Squad Building Process

18 May 2016

Micky speaking to players as he looks at his squad

Town boss Micky Mellon returned from a short break admitting that the rebuilding process of his squad is well and truly underway.
Following last season’s narrow escape from relegation, Micky is already in discussions with current players about extending their time at the Greenhous Meadow whilst also meeting with potential new signings.
“We’re now busy getting on with the recruitment side of things and rebuilding the squad again for a positive next season,” said Micky.
“We’re speaking to a number of our own players who will no doubt be assessing any option that they believe they have together with us going out there and having a look at who we may believe will make our group better.
“Even though we’re not at the ground every day it’s still a very busy time of the year.”
With Micky working from his home in Blackpool, Recruitment Analysist Adam Henshall has been holding down the fort so to speak at the Greenhous Meadow.
“I speak to him countless amount of times during the day to be honest to keep in touch with things and I’m out and about meeting players.
“I’ve met a few over the past couple of days so it is very busy. It’s more on the road and on the phone than being in Shrewsbury but if I’m going to go and meet players that’s the way it’s going to be.
With clubs up and down the country releasing their retained over the past few days, Town have yet to publish their own, something Micky believes will be done as soon as he meets with Town CEO Brian Caldwell.
“We’ve got to wait, Brian will be back off holiday on Friday then we should be a lot clearer by then when we’ve sat down and had a conversation,” added Micky.
“You’re constantly working all the time but that’s the nature of the job. It’s a busy time of the year and it’s important that you try and get things right.”
“We’re waiting to see who becomes available as well but we have a number of targets who we believe will make the group stronger for what the next challenge will be and we’re excited if we can get them over the line I’m sure the fans will be as well.
And as Micky added, he is hoping to get any deals done nice and early to ensure all new players are ready to go at the beginning of pre-season.
“That would be ideal. We would absolutely be looking to try and get as many if not all in before pre-season.
“It’s not always possible but it would be nice in an ideal world to get them all in by then but I’m pretty sure we’ll have the majority of them in by then and we’ll work hard to try and make sure that happens.”
