Ian Black Reaction From Swindon Town Defeat

20 December 2015

Midfielder Insists Players Must Believe

Town’s tenacious midfielder Ian Black insists his side must believe in themselves if they are to start winning more games.

Speaking after the home defeat to Swindon Town, Black felt his side more than deserved a point out of the game but feels some of his team mates might be suffering from a lack of belief.

“We’re very disappointed,” admitted Black. “The first-half was a poor start from us and the goal was poor marking in the box but I think overall we dominated. I don’t think they had any opportunities in the second-half.

“But what’s disappointing is the amount of balls and crosses that got put in the box and with the size of our front two not to get onto the end of any of them.

“And obviously the amount of time the goalkeeper was allowed to pick the ball up with no pressure. It’s a difficult one to take.

“It’s about having belief and wanting to get onto the end of them. I think today we didn’t believe we could have got there.

“We’ll look at it and I’m sure the boys will understand and can see that they need to find that desire and hunger to want to get on the end of it rather than waiting on it coming to them.

“I think if we had that in the second half we could have scored six or seven goals. If we play like we played in the second half with a bit more of a cutting edge then we’ll do well.”

Town slipped to defeat on a wet and windy afternoon is Shropshire thanks to a far post finish from Nicky Ajose from a exceptional cross from Anton Rodgers. But Black feels his side have to take some blame for the goal and reaffirmed that games like these must not fall out of their grasp.

“It was poor marking in the box and the boys have held their hands up,” said Black.

“But we didn’t do well on it. Again we need to believe in ourselves more.

“This spell is very important. We need to kick on but this was a sore one to take.

“We’ve got ability in there and belief and we’ve just got to find that belief. People will say luck but you’ve got to earn your own luck. The gaffer’s good and he’ll get us going and find that belief in the group.”

One positive for Town was the impressive performance of Junior Brown. The former Fleetwood man was a constant threat down the left hand side and was unlucky not to see one of his many crosses finished off.

“Junior gives you everything,” added Brown. “You know what you’re going to get with him. He’s up and down that pitch for 90 minutes. He put some great balls and we couldn’t ask anymore from him. The boys just need to show that desire to get on the end of them.

“There were a few positives to take. Obviously the result is negative. We can’t dwell on it and put our heads down too much.

“It’s still early. You don’t want to talk about relegation because straight away that’s a negative. You always look above. As soon as you start looking below you then it’s a negative fact that you’re going to feed through the team. We always talk about what’s going on up at the top because that’s where we want to be.”

And when asked about weather he believed Town had enough inside the dressing room to avoid relegation, the former Rangers man was adamant in his response.

“More than enough! There’s a lot of experience in there and I’m more than confident we’ll be fine.

“Fleetwood – it’s one we can win and that’s all we need to look at. It’s going to be tough whoever we play against but we’ve got more than enough in this squad to go and take three points.”
