Latest after Leutwiler's injury picked up at Grimsby
Jayson Leutwiler was injured in the 38th minute of the FA Cup game at Grimsby Town following a collision with Connor Townsend.After treatment it became obvious that Jayson was unable to continue due to damage to his face and concussion picked up in the challenge.
Jayson was stretchered from the pitch and tended to by the Grimsby Town medical staff. The club doctor was on hand to assess and perform stitches to cuts on Jayson’s nose and a split lip.
Jayson was ok to travel home on the team coach and is now resting up before further assessment on the extent of his injuries.
ShrewsWeb spoke to Town physio Chris Skitt this morning to get an update on the situation;”Jayson is alright he was a little bit woozy after the game and as you could see from the cameras there quite a severe head clash.
“When I got on the pitch I checked his spine was alright and there was no sign that he had damaged any nerves so that was encouraging.
“He has got three quite decent sized cuts across his face and he’s made a good job of breaking his nose.
“The biggest issue at the moment is concussion and he was a little bit away with the fairies last night and when we got back.
“I must thank Richard Higgs as he stayed with Jayson overnight to make sure that he was ok.
“We will reassess Jayson today in terms of how his concussion is coming along and he will probably have to see a consultant in regards to his nose and whether he needs an operation or not.
“I would imagine that he will be missing for a week or so and when he does come back you will see him wearing a mask to protect his nose for a while.”
The clash happened after Jayson was quickly off his line to slide in and deny Grimsby a good goalscoring chance. Townsend was challenging for the ball and caught Jayson but Skitty and manager Micky Mellon have looked back at the incident and think it was a fair challenge;”We had a good look at it afterwards and there was no malice in the challenge, to be fair to the lad he looked quite shook up when Jayson was getting carried off.
“It’s one of those brave goalkeeping decisions that ends with face against knee and that doesn’t normally end up well for the face.”
Micky Mellon has ruled Jayson out of the weekend’s trip to Peterborough and the concern at the moment is concussion. There are strict guidelines in place for players who have taken a knock to the head and Skitty will be following these;”We’ve got very strict pathways for concussion and the FA have this week released a whole new concussion guideline this week.
“We will be well versed in following that protocol and then get him assessed by the consultant.”
