Clicker's thoughts after the win at Barnsley
Jordan Clark was delighted with his 93rd minute goal that sealed the win against his former club Barnsley. The winger admitted to being nervous prior to the match but was jubilant after Shrewsbury’s first win in the league:
“I can’t believe it. Obviously I haven’t played for a while so it was just nice to be back in the team. Credit to the lads the pressing we did in the second half won us the game. It was written in the stars that I would score the winner today. I felt a bit guilty because I am a Barnsley lad and I had been at the club since I was six. All my family are Barnsley fans, about 20 of them turned up today!”
“I was a bit nervous going into the game with all my family here and it being at my old club but I just got on with it and tried to enjoy it as much as I could. I was only a young lad when Barnsley released me which was gutting. It would have been nice for things to have ended differently there but it was out of my hands. I didn’t have a chance to speak to many of the coaches here but hopefully I will get to see them and see how they are doing.”
Clark was daring to show his face in Barnsley after the game as he was planning on celebrating with his friends:
“I am staying around here tonight. I live about 10 minutes away so it will be nice to be back home. I will probably see a few of my mates tonight but they are all Barnsley fans so it may be a good idea for me to keep a low profile!”
The 21-year-old felt Town deserved the win with their performance and Clark is claiming he was the last man to get a flick on Shrewsbury’s first goal which would give him a brace in the game:
“I am claiming the first goal too. I don’t know who headed it but I felt the ball flick off me so I am claiming two goals today!”
“I think we played really well for the first twenty minutes of the first half. Then it was a big blow to lose James Wesolowski and Barnsley came back into it before half time. After that I felt we created enough chances to deserve to win the game in the second half. “
“I was playing in the hole and Liam Lawrence kept telling me whenever I got the chance to turn and run at the defence. I had a couple of chances before the goal which I couldn’t convert but I kept on trying to get myself another chance and get the winner for us. It was a little bit fortunate with the deflection but it was just meant to be today I think.”
The former Barnsley man is hoping the win will be a catalyst for himself personally to hold down a place in the starting line-up and also for the club to kick start their season now the first win in the league was out of the way:
“I am not going to get ahead of myself now. There is still a lot of things I need to work on so I will continue working hard in training and hopefully I can keep my place in the team. I am looking forward to getting back on the training pitch next week and hopefully earning my place in the team for the next game.”
“It is onwards an upwards now. We haven’t been playing bad we just haven’t been able to get the results that we should have. The next game is away at Southend which is difficult but no game is easy in this league and we will go into it full of confidence.”
