Skipper devastated after Chesterfield defeat

Liam Lawrence was devastated after Shrewsbury were humbled 7-1 by Chesterfield. The club captain apologized to supporters for the poor performance:

“It was probably my worst day in football. I have never been in a team that has had seven put past them before so it is really disappointing. We didn’t stick to the plan we were set and we had two injuries early on which didn’t help.”

“Things didn’t go for us all over the pitch and we defended poorly as well as having a red card and two penalties against us. I want to apologize to the fans, I went over to see them after the game and I promise that result will not happen again.”

The 34-year-old believes Shrewsbury deserve to be near the bottom of the table with how they have played during the first half of the season:

“It is humiliating to lose by such a score line and all the boys are disgusted about it. Everyone is really hurting in the dressing room. We are determined to put this right. The lads are gutted for the fans and the staff.”

“Everybody works so hard behind the scenes and we have been working solid so it is really upsetting for us. Football hurts sometimes and it has today and this performance is why we are in the position we are.”

The midfielder believes Shrewsbury will be able to bounce back from the defeat when they travel to Cardiff in the FA Cup next Sunday

“I think it has been better this last few weeks and we really need some more wins to push us up the table. We have enough quality to stay up in this league and I am sure we can do that. Hopefully we can go to Cardiff now and take out some of our anger by playing really well.”
