Micky Mellon on Callum Grogan

Gaffer's thoughts on Callum making the step up

Manager Micky Mellon is looking forward to working with newly signed Callum Grogan from the under-18s side after he agreed his first professional contract with the club.

The 18-year-old, who played in Ian Dawes’ under-18s side for the past two seasons, has become the second youth signing this summer following the signing of Ethan Jones.

And Micky believes that Callum has the talent needed to contest for a first team spot.

“I’m pleased that we’ve got another young talented boy into the group now,” said Micky.

“Hopefully with that development that we believe that Cal’s got in front of him, he can get closer to coming into the first team group.”

Mellon admits that having a decent youth setup at Shrewsbury is pivotal for the club to move forward and he thinks that the current setup is producing brilliant talents.

“It’s huge to us but we aren’t going to get carried away, we’ve still got a lot of work to do,” said the manager.

“Certainly Cal’s done the first part of the development that we believe needs to be done and to levels that we believe can be hit.”

“He’s gone and got himself to the next level now and he’s got to keep doing that.

“We believe that he’s got a real chance and with a lot of hard work from him and us, and hopefully we can have another player coming through to the first team in the coming months or years.”

Micky also said that he is pleased with his squad at the moment but admits that the club have to be patient with the players.

“You’ve always got to be patient, It’s something you have to be as a manager,” said Mellon.

“Obviously you’d like everything on that first day of pre-season to be the way you want it to be but football never really seems to be like that.

“We are still working hard on trying to get a few things done and we will continue to do that in order to improve that first team.

“I’m now certainly looking forward to getting back to training, getting the group unified and getting them ready for that first game of the season.”
