Gaffer’s thoughts after the home defeat to Burton Albion
Town’s run without a home win continues after a disappointing home defeat at the hands of Burton Albion.Town’s performance was a good one and they had the better of the chances over the 90 minutes but just couldn’t get the ball past McLaughlin the Brewers goal. When they did the woodwork was there to save Burton with Junior Brown hitting both the bar and the post.
After the game Town’s manager Micky Mellon spoke to the press to give his thoughts on a last minute defeat;”It’s always tough and the worst way to lose a game of football.
“We are in a tough place at the moment where things don’t seem to be going for us but at these times it’s when you show character.
“We need to do that, put this game behind us and move on as quickly as we can.”
Overall the Gaffer felt his side had put in the better of the performances which were on show today;”I thought we were the better side, there is no doubting that, but at times we looked a little tired and we had to keep the lads going at times.
“They kept going and they kept trying and there were a few opportunities, we’ve hit the post, we’ve hit the bar and had other opportunities that fell to us but we didn’t take them.
“I think anyone who was here will say it was harsh that we finished with nothing from the game and i think Burton would have to count their blessings that they go home with 3 points from that.”
Burton’s goal came right on the stroke of full-time when Duffy found space to slot the ball home form in front of goal. A disappointing goal but one that Micky wasn’t prepared to pin on one single player;”It’s right at the end and I don’t want to hang people out to dry about it.
“We are a team, we are a group and at certain moments there people who have to do better especially at that time of the game.
“It was a real blow to lose a game down to a goal that late on and in that manner.”
Last season Town’s record at the Greenhous Meadow was a good one with a long unbeaten run. This season though defeats to Chesterfield and now Burton as well as a draw with Millwall means that Town are in uncharted territory;”This is where you have to show character, this is now where people find out what you have got.
“The good times are easy, in periods like this you find out who is who.
“I’ll be ready to come back in Monday, the players will as well and we will have to do what you have to do in football and that is to get going again very quickly.”
Town now turn their attention to the JPT game at home to Oldham Athletic on Tuesday night. To finish with Micky was asked if the players would take much lifting when they return to training on Monday;”We’ll see about that Monday but there is a very disappointed group of players in there.
“The manner and the timing of the when the goal came but we’ve been this through before and we will bounce back again very quickly.”
