Gaffer's thoughts after picking up a point at windy Fleetwood
Manager Micky Mellon was left disappointed after his side couldn’t break the deadlock in a tough game against Fleetwood Town.Shrewsbury drew 0-0 to Fleetwood at Highbury Stadium in a 90 duel between the sides which consisted of end to end football throughout.
And Micky thought that the Shrews did more than enough to get the three points.
“I think if we are all honest, we should have won it,” said Micky.
“Probably, even comfortably to be honest because of the amount of clear cut goal scoring opportunities we created.
“On the flip side of that, the performance, as a whole, I couldn’t fault it other than putting the ball in the back of the net.”
Micky also mentioned after being questioned on the topic that he couldn’t choose his best chance of the game due to their being so many.
“I don’t know, there were just so many one v ones weren’t there,” said the manager.
“I think maybe the one at the end. I think right at the very end was a very good chance.
“There’s other ones that went across the face of the goal like Shaun Whalley, with the one v one in the first half.
“There was that many, I think I would have to go over them all again to properly answer that.”
Micky looked at the result as a positive as well due to this being the first clean sheet for the club since October of last year.
“You’ve seen what they are capable of,” said Micky.
“I keep saying that every week, you’ve seen that they are capable of defending now.
“They know the standard they have to achieve in order to keep clean sheets at this level.”
The manager thinks that this is a step in the right direction for the club.
“I think the performances have been good and I like to be honest and we want to keep moving forward,” said Mellon.
“The performance today was excellent again and we definitely deserved more from the game.”
Finally Micky apologised for not going over to the travelling fans at the end but his mind was elsewhere at the final whistle.
“I want to say thanks to the fans today and I mean that as I got so caught up with the referee there at the final whistle I probably never gave them a little clap,” said Micky.
“When I came out today I thought the turnout was tremendous, they got right behind us and the amount that were here today was terrific and we do value their support.
“I got caught up with the referee as I thought that was the worst yellow card decision that I’ve seen for a long time on Knight-Percival.”
