Micky Mellon post Southend United

Gaffer's thoughts after late home defeat to the Shrimpers

Micky Mellon was down after his side slumped to at late defeat at home to Southend United:

“It is probably the best we have played at home for a while but we didn’t take our chances and switched off in defence and when you do that you end up on the wrong end of the result. Apart from the mistake for their goal I can’t really criticize the lads’ performance, it is a sore one to take. Tonight was a good performance but we got punished for mistakes.”

“I thought we played some good football and got in some great positions but we lacked the end product. We are definitely improving performances but I am struggling to be able to legislate for the lack of concentration that we have been guilty of recently. I would have been disappointed with a point let alone a loss. The second half after we equalized I thought we would go on and win it. We were controlling the game and they were hanging on. They went down to ten men and we were getting extra players up the field but then we switched off from the throw in and we found ourselves behind again.”

The former Fleetwood boss feels Shrewsbury will avoid the drop if they can banish the mistakes:

“I have found out a lot about myself this season and I am a fighter. I am very sure that there is not an awful lot I can do about that goal, it is a soul destroyer when people keep switching off. If we can carry on like we did tonight and cut out the mistakes then we will be fine. The Fleetwood game coming up is a massive for us, but all the games are big now. The boys have to focus and take as many points as we can from now on.”

The 43-year-old is trying his upmost to keep the players upbeat for the relegation battle that lies ahead:

“I will take every day as it comes, life is what it is. I will make sure my team is prepared again come Sunday. I am here to help the lads and work with them and have them ready for the games. We will go up to Fleetwood looking for a result and I will have the squad in the best possible mind to do that.”
