Micky Mellon pre Chesterfield

Gaffer looking forward to trip to Chesterfield

Town boss Micky Mellon wants his team to carry their recent momentum forward into 2106; starting at Chesterfield on Saturday.

Micky knows his side will be in for a tough test when they visit the Proact Stadium this weekend as he will be pitting his wits against Danny Wilson, someone he knows very well.

And Micky expects a rise in performance from his opponents for their new boss.

“You always do (get a reaction) when you get a new manager in,” said Micky. “I obviously know Danny very well having worked with him for that time at Barnsley so I know that he’ll go in there and want to make a quick impact and the players will be wanting to impress him.

“All of that is there for us to compete against as well but we’ll go over there with that wee bit of momentum that we’ve started to create now and will fancy ourselves to get a result.

“It’s something we’d say to the players. Expect a bit of an upsurge in attitude as they want to impress their new manager so it’s something else that we have to be ready for and meet that challenge.

“We’ve got to concentrate on ourselves and what we’re doing particularly well at the minute; that won’t change regardless of their style of play or how they want to play the game.

“We’ll continue to play the principles that we know that we’ve got to do for us to function as a team.

“You want to carry that on and carry that bit of momentum that we’ve started to gain on into another really good game up at Chesterfield. It’s one we’re well prepared for and really looking forward to.”

The Town boss is hopeful of having a near fully-fit squad to choose from for the visit to Chesterfield, with current absentees Jayson Leutwiler and Jermaine Grandison now in full training.

And with other players having come in and impress, the boss is enjoying his selection headaches.

“He’s (Shaun Whalley) done very, very well in the game at Crewe,” said Micky. “We’re really, really pleased for him as we were with a number of the players so of course he can expect to be counted very high in our thoughts to what we’re going to go with at Chesterfield.

“Jayson is back and trained today (Wednesday). He’s got a face mask so he’s back in full training. It’s a good headache to have because they are two very good goalkeepers. I’ve said many times I’m blessed to have so much talent in the building.

“Jermaine (Grandison) has trained this morning so he’s going to be in our thoughts. Larnell (Cole) is fit and available for selection so it’s good to have everyone fit and available.”
