Midfielder frustrated after Southend defeat

Richie Wellens was frustrated after Shrewsbury were beaten at home by Southend. However the midfielder feels there were positives to take from the game:

“We are devastated because we felt we played really well today. We couldn’t take our chances so it is tough to take the loss. We should have been more focused from the throw in that led to their goal. It was poor to let one of their players in the middle of our defence and that cost us.”

“Even though we are disappointed we have to look at the positives. It is the best we have played at home in a long time. We have some big games coming up against Fleetwood and Blackpool so we need to start picking up points. It is great that we are progressing in the cup but it is a shame that the wins didn’t come in the league as we would have had six more points then.”

The 35-year-old thought Shrewsbury had enough chances to win the game and is hopeful the team can pick up some points in their next couple of games:

“When we equalized I thought we could go on and get the winner but in the end I think it helped Southend to go down to ten men. They sat deeper and shut us out and caught us when we were napping to punish us.”

“We are in a bad position in the league and we are frustrated we couldn’t improve our points tally tonight. We have a chance to put some distance between us and those around us in the next couple of matches.”

The former Leicester man is feeling stronger each game as he closes in on being back to full fitness:

“It has been difficult for me because I had been out for a while but I felt okay today and I just need to keep getting minutes under my belt and get the strength back in my legs.”
