Striker looking forward to return to Greenhous Meadow
Scott Vernon is delighted to be back in the Town squad and back playing games. He was brought into the starting line-up for the FA Cup game away to Gainsborough Trinity and has pretty much been an ever present since.
He’s added a little experience and calmness to the frontline and is pleased with his run of games; “It has been a strange season for myself. I was out of favour at the start but I have kept working hard and plugging away and now I find myself in the team. That’s football these days, squads are big and you have to wait for your chance. It feels like all the hard work has paid off now I am back in the team.”
“If we were winning and climbing the table I would be a lot happier but in a personal note I am content. The one area I could improve is adding goals to my game, I have been getting assists but not enough goals.”
The striker was determined to stay at the club and is hoping to keep in the team for as long as possible: “I was persistent in staying and I wanted to get back in the fold. When you are sat in the stands it is a depressing time but I didn’t want to move on and make rash decisions because I have to think of other things like my family who are happy here. My contract is up in the summer but for now I just need to focus on my football. I need to think of my family and I will always do what is right for them, so far that has meant staying here and that has worked out well. We live in Telford and our quite happy but things can change and if I do have to move at the end of the season then I will.”
“I just want to stay here and play in as many games as I can for the rest of the season. I am taking it a week at a time because I know things can change very fast in football.”
The 32-year-old feels the squad showed a great strength of character to bounce back from the crushing defeat to Chesterfield: “You have to try and stay positive and get the lads going. They are a good set here who can see the bigger picture and not get too down. It was just one of those days and we don’t want to keep harping on about it, it has gone now and we need to focus on more positive things like the Cardiff win.”
Vernon is confident a win against Barnsley in the next game can be a springboard to improve their poor home form: “Barnsley is a massive game. They are near us in the table and had a season like ours so it is a chance for us to get a win at home, all the lads are excited for it. We need to get back to being in the middle of the table and a win on Saturday against a team in our position will help us to do that. All we can do is concentrate on ourselves and see where it takes us. I think the fans will be wondering which Shrewsbury will turn up in the next game so hopefully we can get a bit more consistency and it can be a positive day for us.”
“It is tough to put your finger on our poor form at home. Last season we were so solid but we have gone up a level since then and we can’t be as dominant. We haven’t found the magic formula at home yet but we are working on it and hopefully we will improve sooner rather than later.”
