A minute later, Wilson was denied one-on-one as he slid shot in the box with the effort being saved by the legs of Williams.

On the hour mark, Town went close to breaking the deadlock at midfielder Tom King came in from the left, beat his man as he entered the penalty area and drilled a low shot just wide of the far post.

At the other end, Jordan Holt worked his way into the box for the visitors hit a left-footed shot just wide of the far post.

Shrewsbury started the second period on the front foot and Wilson looked to catch out Carlisle goalkeeper Rhys Williams at his near post, but his high shot was well saved.

However, it remained goalless at the break.

But the best chance of the first half fell for Wilson when he found space in the Carlisle penalty area on the left, cut inside and curled an effort just over the crossbar.

Town got the game underway and John McAtee hit a dipping shot onto the roof of the Carlisle net from 25 yards out in the fourth minute.
