There was no way back for Town, though, and Everton added a fourth as Nathan Broadmead finished from close range.

Cavery then fired in a third for the Toffees' although the Shrews reduced the deficit to 3-1 as Ryan Barnett rifled the ball low into the bottom left corner from outside the box after McAtee had been denied from close range.

However, the hosts doubled their lead with 48 minutes on the clock as Shayne Cavery fired low into the bottom right corner from the edge of the penalty area.

Town had a chance to equalise in the 41st minute as Northern Ireland international Christopher Gallagher saw a fierce low shot deflected behind for a corner.

The game was played in thirds as opposed to the usual 45 minutes each half, with the players having a break at the 30-minute mark before resuming play.

Everton then went in front in the 28th minute as Nathan Holland drove into the box from the left before firing low into the bottom right corner of the net.

After a fairly even start, Shrewsbury carved out the game's opening chance as defender Callum Grogan chipped a ball over the top of the Toffees' defence for the run of striker John McAtee on the inside right whose lofted effort went straight into the hands of the goalkeeper.

Shrewsbury Town's youth team slipped to a 4-1 defeat in a friendly at Premier League side Everton's under-18s on Tuesday.
