Dawes On Youth Victory At Morecambe

9 August 2015

Under-18s Coach Pleased With Start To Season

"From the start of season to now he's been absolutely superb and looked like an England goalkeeper for me," Dawes said of Lewis.

"He looks physically excellent and technically in the games he's been superb for us."

Goalkeeper Harry Lewis will also go to another England men's goalkeepers training camp later this month.

"It's great for Chris," said Dawes.

"When we signed him he was already in the setup for Northern Ireland and he's just improved gradually throughout.

"He's been great for us and he's started really well. I'm sure he'll do well for Northern Ireland."

More positive news for the youth team this week saw Chris Gallagher called-up for Northern Ireland for their Under-17 friendlies in Slovenia in August.
"You can see it in the performance that every one of them works hard off the ball," he said.

"They feed off each other and they're working hard for each other and, when they do score, they feel that everyone has been a part of it.

"I thought it was a great first goal (from Kenton). It was a great little move and final pass, and Joe earnt his goal to be fair - he was good again.

"In the first 20-25 minutes of the second half we won the game.

"It's great for Ethan to score a goal because throughout pre-season you could see him getting a bit frustrated - he's been getting closer and closer.

"He gets his goals not just because of the quality of his finishes but his hard work off the ball. He earns the goals.

"I said to the players that if they perform like that week in week out and anybody does beat you then they've earned it."

Dawes was pleased with the work rate from his side and feels they are a close-knit group.

"It was a really good start (to the season) from the players," said Dawes.

"They really impressed me although we started sloppy for the first five minutes.

"Whether the players aren't used to the long journeys I don't know, but it's something they've got to pick up on.

"They adapted well after the first five minutes and I thought we were miles the better team after that.

"We thoroughly deserved the victory and I don't think 4-1 flattered us at all.

"The positive thing was that we stuck to the plan and never started panicking (after going behind)."

And Dawes was pleased with how his side responded after going behind inside five minutes at Kendal Town Football Club.

A second-half hat-trick from Ethan Jones added to Joe Kenton's equaliser to hand the Shrews the victory.

Town's under-18s kicked-off their 2015/16 Football League Youth Alliance - North West league campaign with a 4-1 win at Morecambe on Saturday.

Head of Academy coaching Ian Dawes was delighted with Shrewsbury Town's youth team's start to the 2015/16 season.
