Captain Liam Lawrence is no stranger to promotion battles - so the midfielder is relishing Shrewsbury Town's clash with York City on Saturday.

"He (Ryan) has all the right attributes and has done fantastic this season," said Lawrence.

"He is a good little player and is rightfully up for player of the season because he is one of the best players in the league."

Lawrence also praised fellow midfielder Ryan Woods who, at the tender age of 21, has been nominated for the Sky Bet League 2 Player of the Year award at the Football League Awards.
"They (York) have a big backline that we will have to move about, but if we can play like we did against Exeter we will be fine," he said.

"We need to take the game to them and create chances, and to be fair we often do that at home."

Lawrence has called for Town to take the game to York this weekend.

"I just want to do it for Shrewsbury," said Lawrence.

"When I came here there was only four players they had kept on and a load of new fresh faces.

"The club is now going in the right direction so for me, if we can get promoted or even win the title, it would be the icing on the cake.

"We are close but we are not there yet. We are not over the line yet so we must keep focused.

"It’s all to play for, anything can happen at this stage. We have two home games out of the three games left that could give us a chance going to Cheltenham.

"I'm trying to keep the changing room grounded, obviously we're so close to a title and not just promotion so we have to make sure everybody is pulling in the right direction."

And the 33-year-old – who has represented the Republic of Ireland on 15 occasions – admitted the current challenge excited him as much as any he has faced during his long career.

Lawrence has been promoted to the Premier League with both Sunderland and Stoke City in the past.

Town take on the Minstermen in the Sky Bet League 2 clash at the Greenhous Meadow this weekend (3pm kick-off) looking to close in on promotion to League One.
