Manager remaining cautious despite good form
Manager Micky Mellon is cautious not to get carried away with Shrewsbury Town's recent run of form ahead of the game at Exeter City on Saturday.Town head down to the South West at the weekend to face the Grecians in the Sky Bet League 2 fixture at St James Park (3pm kick-off).
And Micky puts Shrewsbury’s current six-game winning run in the league down to hard work and the high standards at the football club.
“We are second and in a terrific position, but it is one less than we want it to be," said Micky, speaking at the RAF Shawbury visit.
"We are desperate to get to the top but its early days and we are pleased with the effort the lads have put in and the points we have accumulated.
"Nothing has been achieved yet, though, there is still a long way to go.
“The players know very clearly that if they don’t continue to do the things they have been doing well over the past couple of months, we will lose games of football.
"We are keeping the standards very high because we know that real hard work and attention to detail has got us to the level we are currently performing at.”
Micky believes there is still even more to come from his side heading into the Christmas period next month.
“I always believe that it could be better," he said.
"I think we can always improve. I would never think that we are the finished article because the minute you think that, you take your eye off the ball.
"I would say that we are nowhere near where I would want us to be, but I would say that because I’m the manager who demands high standards and wants improvement all the time.”
Already this term, Shrewsbury have beaten teams in all of the top four English divisions.
And Micky feels this has been crucial to get the fans believing in the club again.
“We'e particularly pleased with the performances we have put in this season, it helps to getting some momentum going after last season and getting the fans believing in us again," he said.
"A lot of work still needs to be done, but we are heading in the right direction.”
Micky will have a near-full squad to choose from for the game away to Exeter on the weekend, although Andy Mangan remains a doubt through injury.
“We have 19 or 20 fit for the game, which just leaves behind Andy Robinson who trained with us today and should be ready for selection soon which is good news," said Micky.
"We will see how Andy (Mangan) is. He wants to travel whether he is fit or not because he wants to be a part of the group, so we will probably take him with us just for the comedy value!”
