Micky Mellon On Defeat At Fleetwood Town

6 October 2015

Manager Felt Town Had Chances To Score Second

“We’ve got to stop committing football suicide by giving away so many cheap goals.”

“Of course, you have to be good at home but like I say we have to cut out the individual efforts to give ourselves an opportunity.”

“If we can cut out the individual errors ad givce ourselves more of a chance then we’ll be alright.

“We’ve taken every game as it came. We knew they were three difficult games when we looked at them but we’re disappointed to lose any game.

Town’s defeat on the Flyde Coast made it three successive away defeats on the bounce but Micky hopes that returning to the Greenhous Meadow will give the team a lift.

“It was a great strike and a terrific goal. He’s very capable of that.”

“I thought he was excellent He was everything we thought he was going to be and of course he’s still chasing fitness so that 65 minutes will do him no harm.

“We had to get Ian Black some time and I think he looked very, very good,” added Micky. “There were good performances at times that we’re pleased with and then it looked like a few of them got tired probably from a lack of match practice.

But for Micky, the opportunity to see some of his fringe players get some action was one positive to take from the defeat, especially with the performance of debutant Ian Black and a superb individual goal from Junior Brown.

“It’s a fantastic strike and we know he’s well capable of that,” added Mellon.

The game looked set for penalties as the game entered added time and after Hunter had struck the post ten seconds earlier, Bobby Grant’s thunderbolt ensured Town’s JPT Cup run would end at the second round.

“I think when you give away a goal it certainly gives Fleetwood a lift because of the manner in which we gave it away and gave them that little lift more than us. We did have one or two more chances from then which we’re disappointed we n ever made more of but that goal was the turning point.”

“He’s obviously under-hit a back pass and the lads nipped in a skipped past the goalkeeper and scored really from nothing.

The goal came after an error by Jermaine Grandison, with the ex-Coventry man under-hitting a back pass under pressure from Ashley Hunter.

“This is football at this level and again we’ve been caught out. We’re disappointed especially at this stage of the game where we made the error.

“We had enough chances to get that second goal but we just couldn’t get that tonight so we’re disappointed we never got that,” said Micky.

And Micky, who was returning to the club he managed from 2008-2012, felt his side needed to capitalise on their first-half opportunities.

Junior Brown’s sublime first-half strike was cancelled out by second-half goals from substitutes Ashley Hunter and a stoppage time rocket from Town’s former loanee Bobby Grant ended their hopes of a JPT cup run.

Manager Micky Mellon was left rueing individual mistakes as his side let slip a half-time lead to go down 2-1 at Fleetwood Town.
