Micky Mellon Pre-Hartlepool United

Manager's thoughts ahead of Pools test

  • Micky preparing to face Ronnie Moore's basement side
  • Pools the first team to beat Town in the league this season
  • Manager insists it will be a tough test on Saturday
Manager Micky Mellon is not taking Shrewsbury Town's game against bottom-of-the-table side Hartlepool United on Saturday lightly - and ensures it will be a very tough game.

"He adds a lot to the group," said Micky.

"He’s a winner and it’s great to have him training every day because he keeps everyone’s standards high in training as well as his own.

“If you are not doing things probably you get a kick off Wes."

Australian midfielder James Wesolowski is back from injury and has been a huge boost within the squad according to Micky.
“We know each other a lot better and we’ve been together a lot longer now so you would hope that we have got to know what we can do and what we need to do to get success," he said.

“We could do with a goal absolutely, we’ve played in three very tight games and we can’t lose sight of the fact that in three games there wasn’t many chances at either end of the pitch.

“We’re certainly disappointed that we haven’t worked goalkeepers more in the last three games but you can’t lose sight of the fact that it was against three of the teams that are in and around us and they were always going to be close.

“We’ve worked hard this week on trying to be a bit more aggressive and a bit more dynamic in that final third with our movement and our passing.”

However, Micky ensures that his side are a much better unit than in their previous meeting with Pools.
“It’s a tough game," said Micky.

"I don’t think it’s fair to take any game in our situation and say it’s a banana skin, I think they are all tough games now.

“We’ve all played each other so we all know a lot about each other.

"Hartlepool are the next challenge. They have got a new manager, a man I know very well in Ronnie Moore, and it will be another tough game like every game in League Two is.

“Like every game in this league, we know we have got to be somewhere near our best in order to try and get something from the game, so it’s no different to any other game.”

“We never played well up there (in September) and Hartlepool deservedly beat us, and I don’t think I can say that many times, but certainly on that day Hartlepool deserved a lot of credit.

“They scored a really early goal and we could not find the answers to try and break them down and they got a late goal and probably ran out deserved winners, so it’s an important game for us as every game is now that we’re past half way.”

And Micky reiterated that his side will have to be close to their best to pick up the right result.

The Shrews will be looking to even that out and climb back towards the top of the table against Ronnie Moore's side at the weekend (3pm kick-off).

Pools were the first team to beat Town in Sky Bet League 2 this season after a 2-0 victory at Victoria Park in September. Watch a short clip of Micky's pre-match interview below
