Micky Mellon On Patterson Signing

21 August 2015

Manager Delighted To Get Defender Onboard

“He did very well,” said Micky.

“That was one of the reasons we wanted to sign him. The Chairman was as keen to sign him as I was.

“We have a plan of the type of player we want and Sam is one of them.”

“He is a great kid, very humble and wants to work very hard to be a footballer.

“He is fearless so he wouldn’t be scared of stepping into the first team.

“His temperament is superb and I am sure he will do an excellent job.

“He is a full back that likes to get on the ball and get forward, anyone that saw us in pre-season would see that.

“So predominantly he will be a full back for us, his one to one defending is already excellent so he is an exciting prospect for us.”

And Micky was impressed with how the former Barnsley man got on.

Patterson featured in three of Town’s pre-season friendlies – against Cardiff City, Birmingham City and Kidderminster Harriers

“It’s great because I have known Sam for such a long time and I knew the type of character he is,” said Micky.

“He has been here the whole of pre-season and paid for it out of his own pocket.

“He has impressed us all and fits the profile of what we want at the football club.

“We are trying to find players that we can mould into the Shrewsbury way and Sam has done really well and were really excited at the prospect of him getting better and better.

“His desire to be a footballer is fantastic. He has paid for it all himself which shows you the desire he has to make the most of this chance.

“I have seen him every day in training and when I was at Barnsley and I think he is a very good player.

“He fits the style of what we want from our full backs so I am looking forward to working with him and watching him progress.”

And Mellon has praised the former Barnsley player's desire to join the Club.

Paterson will travel with the squad for the trip to Oldham Athletic on Saturday.

The 22-year-old put pen to paper on a one-year deal at Greenhous Meadow on Friday morning after having a trial period at the Club.

Manager Micky Mellon is delighted to have defender Sam Patterson on board at Shrewsbury Town.
