Micky Mellon On Defeat To Walsall

26 April 2016

Manager Admits Starting System Didn't Work

"We'll comb over the performance, I'll look at my own performance, and we'll get the lads ready on Thursday for a massive game on Saturday." Looking ahead to Saturday's final home game of the season against Peterborough United, Micky said:

Town still require three more points to guarantee their League One safety this season.
"If we had started with the intensity we played with in the second half it could have been a different occasion," he said.

"We had a right go in the second half. We looked a threat going forward.

"With the energy we brought on with Whalley and Cole, we started to get in between and make those little passes and can maybe find ourselves unlucky not to get that second goal."

Micky believes the outcome could have been different had the Shrews matched their second-half intensity in the first half.

"I'm disappointed," said Micky.

"I have to take responsibility for the team selection for the first half because, in hindsight, I should never have played it.

"I could see right away that it wasn't going to work.

"We weren't upto the pace of the game, we weren't anticipating in midfield, it was too loose.

"We had to change it early."

And Micky felt an early substitution, which saw Ian Black replace Jack Hendry, was neccessary for way the game started.

First-half goals from Kieron Morris and Rico Henry gave the Saddlers all three points in the Sky Bet League 1 clash at the Banks's Stadium, despite Mat Sadler pulling one back for Town in an improved second period.

Manager Micky Mellon admitted Shrewsbury Town's system early in the opening period at Walsall was the downfall on Tuesday night.
