Knight-Percival On Coventry City Clash

2 October 2015

Defender Feels There Is More To Come From Him

Nathaniel Knight-Percival insists that he has a lot more to offer after consolidating a regular place in Shrewsbury Town's starting eleven.

And Knight-Percival believes it is a good chance to bounce back from the midweek disappointment at Rochdale.

Town will hope to get back to winning ways on their travels when they take on Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena this weekend.

“It’s a nice honour to represent the club as the captain but it doesn’t really change the way in which I go about things," said Knight-Percival.

"Regardless of being captain or not, I would still try and lead the team as much as I can.

“And it’s obviously great to be able to chip in with a goal every now and again. The priority is obviously clean sheets and then you go from there really. A goal is just an added bonus.”

It is almost as if Knight-Percival has never been away having scored two goals since his return to action- including a vital winner away at Southend United a few weeks ago- and taking on the role of captaincy in the Liam Lawrence’s absence.
“Being on the other side of the coin, I can say that it (playing football) is very much appreciated. I love coming in to train every day. It’s the best thing that you can do,” the Enfield-born man exclaimed.

“I started at 8am and finished at 5.30 in the evening (as an electrical fitter). Then I’d go straight from work to training, be home by 9pm, have dinner, and then wake up the next morning and do it all again.

“I did enjoy the job at the time, and I still do enjoy stuff like that but obviously football is so much better.”

So the former Wrexham centre-back’s injury has only made him even more appreciative of the privileged position that he is in.

There was a time when Knight-Percival had to balance his job as an electrical fitter with both his sixth form studies and part-time football commitments.
“It’s still like a work in progress, getting to the same sort of level that I was at before can take some time,” the 28-year-old admitted.

“It might be up to a year before I’m feeling the same as I was pre-injury so there will still be a lot more to come.

“I’m constantly working hard in the gym and on the training pitch. It’s just those little things that will give me an extra edge in games.”

But the defender is evidently eager to reach the levels he attained before that agonisingly long spell on the side-lines, having impressed on his return to action in Shrewsbury's last five league fixtures.

After suffering cruciate knee ligament damage in February, Knight-Percival missed the remainder of Town’s promotion-winning 2014/15 campaign. “It’s not what we wanted at all (the Rochdale defeat), but we have another away game now and a great opportunity to get another three points.”
