FULL-TIME: Tranmere Rovers 2-1 Shrewsbury Town

It was the last kick of the match as Tranmere picked up all three points.

Ethan Jones drilled a low ball across goal from the right and Mathew Jones was unmarked at the far post, but his first-time effort was somehow saved low on the line by Rutter.

Town pushed for an equaliser and it should have came five minutes into added time.

But Tranmere restored their lead in the 77th minute when James Hunter's corner from the left was hit along the ground to the edge of the box and Askew rifled a shot from just inside the penalty area into the far left corner.

Wilson found space in the box and squeezed the ball across goal for the unmarked Jones who then fired a first-time effort into the far left corner from 12 yards out.

However, Shrewsbury's equaliser arrived in the 61st minute through Mathew Jones.

Wilson also looked to catch out Rutter with a lob from Grogan's ball over the top around the hour mark, but the effort was high of the target.

Town came out stronger in the second half and when Wilson chased down a ball over the top, Rovers goalkeeper Patrik Rutter was booked for handling outside his penalty area.

HALF-TIME: Tranmere Rovers 1-0 Shrewsbury Town

Jones also saw a strike from the edge of the box deflect just wide a minute before half-time, but Tranmere remained a goal to the good at the break.

The latter approached the penalty area and then blasted just wide of the near left post.

A quick breakaway in the 37th minute saw Jordan Wilson find John McAtee who then flicked the ball in for the run of Jones.

Chances were few and far between in the first period but Shrewsbury's best came through Ethan Jones.

Town goalkeeper Charlie Bannister, who is on loan from Aston Villa, was then called into action with 23 minutes on the clock as he got down low to turn away a Tranmere free-kick from the edge of the box.

The young Shrews looked to responed and Ethan Jones almost got in a header in front of the goalkeeper from Mathew Jones' corner.

A quick breakaway saw Samuel Ilesanmi find Akpan in space on the inside right, the latter approached the edge of the penalty and fired a high shot in at the near top corner.

Town got the game underway at Lilleshall National Sports Centre, despite it being an away fixture, but it was Tranmere who took the lead in the ninth minute.

FIRST HALF

Callum Grogan, Chris Gallagher, Ryan Barnett, Ethan Jones and Mathew Jones all came back into the side in place of Joel Bonner, Ryan Sears, Joel Carta, George Hassall and Tom King.

Head of Academy coaching Ian Dawes made five changes to the side which was held to a goalless draw with Carlisle United on Tuesday.

TEAM NEWS

However, Daren Askew grabbed a second for Rovers from a corner with 13 minutes of normal time to go, meaning a first defeat of 2016 for the young Shrews.

Tranmere took an early lead through Udoyen Akpan but Mathew Jones found an equaliser for Shrewsbury around the hour mark.

Shrewsbury Town slipped to a narrow defeat to Tranmere Rovers in the Football League Youth Alliance - North West league on Saturday.
