FULL-TIME: Shrewsbury Town 5-1 Wrexham

It was a comfortable victory for the development squad in the end.

Anderson stepped up to fire the resulting spot-kick into the bottom left corner, beyond Whitlock's reach.

But Shrews rubbed salt into the wound as Caton was tripped for a penalty with 13 minutes left.

Wrexham pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute thanks to a close-range finish from Carthey into the bottom left corner.

Town were finding it too easy to get in behind the visitors' backline and Ginnelly was in for a fifth in the 50th minute as Caton this time turned provider, but the former's shot across goal was well held.

This time Ginnelly slid him clean through on the inside right and again Caton went right around the goalkeeper before finding an empty net.

Caton completed his hat-trick within five minutes of the restart in similar circumstances to his second goal.

HALF-TIME: Shrewsbury Town 3-0 Wrexham

Town went in with a three goal advantage at the break thanks to Caton's second, as Alex Fletcher sent the forward through one-on-one with Adam Whitlock in the visitors goal before Caton went around him and tapped into an empty net.

At the other end, Wrexham looked to hit back but Williams' cross from the right was flicked wide by the head of Carthey.

There was a chance for Anderson to find Shrews' third three minutes later as he latched on to a long ball forward and sprinted towards goal, but his shot was wide of the target.

From around 20 yards out and in a central position, Ginelly curled the ball over the wall and into the top left corner past a motionless Wrexham goalkeeper.

Town there doubled their lead thanks to a special free-kick from Ginnelly in the 28th minute.

However, it was Shrewsbury who took the lead in the 18th minute as Caton collected the ball on the edge of the penalty area, moved onto his left foot and fired in at the bottom left corner.

Wrexham carved out the first opening as Joe Williams cut inside from the right on the edge of the box before blasting harmlessly over.

FIRST HALF

Ian Dawes fielded a side made up of nine youth team players. Callum Burton and James Caton were the only first-team pros involved.

TEAM NEWS

Wrexham scored a consolation goal through Regan Carthey, but Town were more than comfortable winners on the day.

Caton's goals added to a special free-kick from Josh Ginnelly and a penalty from Kaiman Anderson in the game at Shrewsbury Sports Village.

A James Caton hat-trick helped Shrewsbury Town to a resounding win over Wrexham in the Final Third Development League - West Divison on Wednesday afternoon.
