AGM votes for club ownership of trianing ground
In the recent Shrewsbury Town accounts shareholders were asked to back a motion that would see the football club take over ownership of the training ground at Sundorne Castle.The training ground has been owned by club chairman Roland Wycherley for nearly 20 years and in that time the club has never paid rent for use of the facility.
At the recent AGM held at the Greenhous Meadow the motion was unanimously passed by shareholders that the training ground become an asset of the football club.
The land was independently valued by Halls and this will be paid for by an issue of shares in the football to the chairman. This will ensure that no cash is taken from the football club.
This now means that with the land being owned by the football club work can begin to invest in the pitches that will allow Micky Mellon and his players a training facility at Sundorne throughout the season.
The club will be working with Maxwell Amenity Limited, who have done an excellent job with the Greenhous Meadow pitch, to advise on getting the best surface possible.
The news has been welcomed by club CEO Brian Caldwell who is looking forward to the redevelopment getting underway.
“It is great news for the club that the shareholders have agreed that the manager and players need better training facilities, It is also important in my opinion that the players train in Shrewsbury to keep the Club’s identity with the town rather than elsewhere” , said Brian.
“With the club taking ownership we can now start to plan investment in the land and bring the site up to the standards needed to allow training throughout the season.”
“Dave Saltman and his team at ALS have turned the Greenhous Meadow pitch into one of the best in the country and I am sure they will be able to bring the training ground up to a similar standard.
“I have had a very similar experience in creating training facilities when I was with St Mirren and look forward to seeing this though as well.
“By having our own training ground that the manager and players will be based at on a daily basis means this would also allow us the potential to consider improvement of the community facilities at the Greenhous Meadow in partnership with Shrewsbury Town in the Community”.
