But promotion is perfect end to successful seasons
Ryan Woods was disappointed with Shrewsbury’s lacklustre performance as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat at home to Plymouth Argyle on the last day of the season. Despite this the midfielder feels it has been a fantastic season and is looking forward to competing in Sky Bet League 1:
“I think we were really disappointing today, especially in the first half with how poor we played. We trained hard in the week and were really up for the game but it just didn’t happen out there for us. We are promoted though so that took the edge off the defeat.”
“We always believed we would go up this year. All the lads knew the aim was promotion with the quality we have in the team. It’s a massive disappointment not to win the league because we felt we were good enough to do that, but second is not a bad place to end up. Credit to Burton, they put in a lot of hard work to hold on when we were biting at their heels for most of the season.”
The 21 year old is thankful for the summer to rest after a busy campaign where he has featured greatly for the club:
“I am looking forward to a rest now because it has been a long hard season. I think that was my 50th game of the season today so I will have a nice rest now ready for next season.”
The midfielder reflected on the transformation the club has undergone in the past 12 months, as well as the fantastic season Woods has had on a personal level:
“At the end of last season things were not great. We had a season to forget but now we have managed to bounce back and reach our aim of promotion, the only way is up for us now. It has been a whirlwind season for me personally. I can only say thank you to the manager and the rest of the staff for playing me in my favoured position, I think I have paid them back with my performances throughout the season. I have to keep improving though, you can always get better.”
Despite Shrewsbury struggling to adapt to League 1 football the last time they were promoted after the 2011/12 season, Woods remains unphased about the step up in class this time around:
“We have nothing to fear in League 1. We will have a few more additions to the side ready for the start of next season and we will be raring to go.”
