Town dropped to a 4-1 defeat away to Barnet on Saturday at Underhill after what was a poor team performance.

Guy Madjo had given Town the early lead after the visitors had started lively and Madjo nearly made it 2-0.

Town then collapsed with some poor defending and individual mistakes that saw the score line go to 3-1 in favour of the home side. In the second half Town steadied things a bit but another goal from the home side saw Barnet run out 4-1 winners.

ShrewsWeb spoke to Town manager Gary Peters this morning to get his thoughts on Saturday's game: "It was a bad defeat which is disappointing as we started the game well.

"For the first 20-minutes we were really at them and really attacking again, this got a good tempo going in the game.

"Our two forwards were causing their centre-backs real problems and we scored after more good work from Guy Madjo.

"You would think that after scoring we would have taken a moment to get stable but unfortunately a bit of naivety crept in and we kept going all out attack. People were continuing to get forward, were overlapping before we were in possession and pretty soon they got back into the game. Even when it went to 1-1 I think we should have been a little more conservative and then worked our way back into the game.

"We continued to be very gung-ho and very attacking and this left us open at the back and two goals came in quick succession through individual errors, bad defending and a team that was being naive to say the least.

"Last year if we got a goal ahead we always felt we could stay in front, in the last two games we've gone in front but it hasn't done us any good as we've carried on in the same way when we should have taken time to stabilise the game.

"Over the last 12 games we've had a very settled side have played 4-4-2 and at the start of that run we said that if we were to make the play-offs we had to go hell for leather. We played in an attacking way, played attractive football and went for it and it looks like it was a wrong move as we've only got 6 points from those 12 games.

"After the game players were talking in the changing room about things we did last year that were far better, we will talk again today to decide what we are going to do for the next 12 games as we need to win 3 football matches very quickly."

GP had the weekend to reflect on the game and reanalysis the match DVD. We asked him if there were any positives that he could take from the performance: "There are no positives that we can take from the game other than that the players were prepared to take full responsibility for the result.

"After the game it was the players who wanted an inquest as to what went on, it was them who wanted to get it out in the open in the changing rooms and make sure everyone was aware of how badly they had let the supporters and the club down over the last few weeks.

"Up till Saturday performances hadn't been bad even though results hadn't been going our way, we've passed the ball better, we've played more football, we've tried to attack more but the record shows that might not be the best thing

"Players who played in last year's team were stating what they thought was better about last year's football than this year's.

"We had a long meeting on Saturday as players wanted to talk about things, at one stage I left the dressing room to allow them to talk between themselves before I went back in, we will talk about it again today.

"We need to make sure we have a battle plan now as we have a totally different target, it's a situation now where we are ignoring promotion, play-offs or anything like that. The only thing we are discussing is to get 3 or 4 games won as soon as possible."

The players have spoken up after Saturday's game and in his post match on BBC Radio Shropshire Kelvin Langmead spoke of their disappointment. GP revealed that the atmosphere in the dressing room is still high even despite the recent poor run of form: "The players are very good and the atmosphere in the dressing room is still super.

"They aren't happy they aren't winning games but as a group of players they are hungry to work, to play and are willing to take responsibility but at the moment they maybe aren't sure how to.

"We have a good group of players here and that was evident on Saturday evening in a time of adversity, it is very easy to look round and blame everyone else but on Saturday there were a lot of people putting their hands up to say they should have done things better.

"Results aren't healthy but the attitude of the players is and I've still got faith in the players who are here and I think this bunch of players are going to go on to be a good team."

After the game GP and the players spoke for well over an hour about the game and what had happened. In the end GP didn't do his normal post match interview with the press and we asked him why that hadn't happened: "We had a long long conversation in the changing rooms and after that conversation I went on to have various individual conversations with certain players which went on till around 6 O'clock.

"When I finally left the dressing room Stuart Dunn was interviewing Kelvin Langmead and I thought it would be better to leave Kelvin to do the interview. That gives people a player's view which is different that hearing from me.

"I didn't want to talk too much as I'd spoken a lot to the players and I felt that as Kelvin was doing the interview it would let the supporters hear what the players say.

"We are very transparent at this club and everyday training is open to the press and James Garrison, Stuart Dunn and James Bond can talk to the players any time. I think this is the time where the press needs to be talking to the players a lot more and getting an insight into they feel.

"People don't need me telling them how things are becuase everyone won't be interesting in what I have to say as they are only interested in us getting some points.

"I'll let the players do the talking for a bit as I think it's healthy and I think the supporters will get a good feel of what the players are feeling and if there is any anti Gary Peters feeling in the changing rooms it will come out.

"It wasn't a bad thing for Kelvin to do the interview after the game and maybe something that we do more of so people understand how the players feel about everything. "
