Simmo Post Rotherham

Posted on: Wed 02 Dec 2009

Town came out of tonight's game with Rotherham with an important win and a well deserved 3 points.

Rotherham came into the game as the inform side but Town exerted themselves early on and with goals from Fairhurst and Devitt were well worth the victory.

After the game Paul Simpson spoke to the press and was asked for his thoughts on the game: "That's the result we were looking for and there were a lot of good things to come out of tonight.

"There was a clean sheet, two goals for two lads who will get a lift from it, it gives us a lift and takes away all the black clouds that some people want to put over us.

"It was a fantastic result and it was against a very good side, a side who are 3rd in the table, who have won five away from home and you can see why.

"I thought we went about it well tonight, we were strong, we defended for our lives at times which you have to do.

"That is the standard we think the players are capable of playing at and they have to do that now week in week out."

Town had the chance to take the lead from the penalty spot but Dave Hibbert's spot kick was saved. They bounced back from this and took the lead just before the half-time mark with a fantastic strike from Waide Fairhurst: "There is never a bad time to take the lead but I was disappointed that we didn't take the lead earlier on the penalty spot.

"Whether it was a penalty or not I don't really know, it seemed a little harsh at the time but unfortunately we didn't make the most of it.

"The pleasing thing was we kept our heads and kept going, Dave Hibbert got himself up and worked incredibly hard to win his headers, link up and keep being a threat.

"We are chuffed we've got the result and a clean sheet for the first time in a while."

Simmo had a special mention for Waide Fairhurst's strike where the youngster drove in a great goal from 30 yards out.Fairhurst has shown what he is capable of and Simmo hopes that he will now push on from this performance: "It was a fantastic strike, you wonder what he's doing when he pulls his foot back and wonder why he's shooting from there but it nestled in the bottom corner and that's all that manners.

"He's a goal scorer and he wants to score goals and I thought he looked a lot livelier tonight. He's had a little bit of a tough patch, it's the first time he's been away from home and was a little bit homesick but he's had a couple of days back in Doncaster and he's come back livelier and with a spring in his step and hopefully we will see a lot more from him."

There was a change of goalkeeper s for this evening's game with David Button coming in to replace Andreas Arestidou.Andreas had done little wrong in the last three games but Simmo just felt that a change was needed: "It is one of the decisions that I thought we had to make, you look at all sorts of things to change it around when you aren't getting the results.

"When you are conceding goals you look at the back four, you look at whether they are getting enough cover, you look at the goalkeeping position and I just felt it was the right thing to do.

"I spoke to Andreas about the decision and sometimes it is harsh as he hasn't done anything wrong but hopefully he will learn from the 3 games he's had and come back even better."

The win now sets things up nicely for Town's weekend trip down to Bournemouth to take on another form side in the division: "It sets us up better than if we had been going into the game on the back of the four results that we had in November.

"It's a new month and I said to all the players that it is the first day of the month with 6 games of football to look forward to.

"This is the first of two really tough tests and that now sets us up for the game down at Bournemouth."
