Simmo Post Bury

Posted on: Sat 20 Feb 2010

Town's good run of form came to an end at Gigg Lane after an in form Bury side gave Town a real game.

The home side had thrown everything they had a Town but the visitors had responded and stood strong. In the end it took a penalty decision to break the Town resistance and after that Town just couldn't get the goal to level the game.

After the match Town manager Paul Simpson spoke to the press and was asked for his thoughts on the game: "It was a frustrating night for us as we didn't play as well as we have done over our recent games.

"It wasn't a night for passing the ball around as the pitch was tricky and was freezing as the game went on.

"We weren't as positive with the ball as we would have liked to have been and didn't threaten their goal as much as we should have.

"It was always one of those nights that was going to be decided by a lapse in concentration or a dubious decision.

"I couldn't say whether it was a penalty or not but as soon as he went down the refs quickly given it.I hope he was right as it was a massive decision, if he wasn't right then its cost us but if he's got it right then fair play to him.

"We have to learn from the game tonight, we have to be more positive with the way we get balls into the box and threaten the opposition's game.

"We've got to pick ourselves up now like Bury have done, they had disappointing result at Chesterfield the other day and have bounced back with a victory tonight.

"We've just had 3 wins and a loss in the last 4 games and if we repeat that form over the next 14 games then we won't be too far away."

In the first half Bury really came out of the blocks and took the game to Town. The home side had all the shots on target and shots off target stats but Town to their credit dug in and worked for the right to go into the break onlevel terms: "There's no doubt we were relieved to go in level at the break and get through to half-time.

"Maybe we had a little bit of luck, our goalkeeper made some saves but we dug in when we had to.

"We have to accept that we have to come to places like Bury and they will have their moments.Saying that they probably had a very long moment in the first half and we didn't have any."

In all games a manager will look for plus points and Simmo highlighted a few of the ones that he took from the performance: "I agree that the defence and keeper were plus points in the way they worked and kept Bury out.

"The way we kept plugging away at the end, Jake Robinson had a little bit of a spark and tried to get things going.

"We had to make changes in the game; I was a bit concerned that Terry Dunfield might get sent off, I felt Dave Hibbert wasn't getting a lot of joy off their two centre halves."

At the end Town could have sneaked a point when Steve Leslie broke through the Bury defence only to see Wayne Brown pull off an excellent reaction save at the foot of his post: "We had a few little scares at the end but it took until the last 10 minutes or so for us to get our fingers out and threaten the goal which is disappointing.

"Maybe it just wasn't our night tonight, we won't put it down as a bad night at the office but what we have to make sure is that we don't lose sight of what we have achieved lately and where we are."

The second half saw a number of changes to the Town side, one of those was the introduction of new signing Jamie Cureton.A few thought that town's new striker might have started the game but Simmo wanted to keep faith with the side who had been in such good recent form: "I thought he got into some good areas tonight but it will take a little time for him to get up to match speed.

"I was just praying that he got one chance but he never got anything at all.

"We've got a strong squad here, probably the strongest I've had in my 18 months at the club, and the squad available to me tonight was a strong one and they will all play a part for us before the end of the season.

"I was always going to put Jamie on the bench for this game as the system and the players deserved another chance.

"We'll now have a look at for Monday night and see if we need fresh legs or need to change it around."
