Town fell to their second defeat in a row after Rochdale came to the Prostar and showed why they are top of the league.
The first half saw Dale push and play some nice football but Town put in the hard work and went in at the break 0-0.
In the second half it was Dale who grabbed the lead and after Shane Cansdell-Sherriff was shown a red card it was a tough task for Town.
After the game Town manager Paul Simpson was asked for his thoughts on the game: "It was probably one of the toughest afternoon's that we've had, the last time we played at home I felt we deserved to win more than 1-0 but today it's fair to say Rochdale probably deserved to win by more than 1-0.
"We didn't do ourselves any favours and when you are playing a side as good as Rochdale you have to be prepared to pass and keep the ball and we didn't do that.
"I think we worked hard enough when we were out of possession but I don't think we worked hard enough when we did have possession.
"We didn't create nowhere near as many chances as we should have and we got what we deserved out of the game, simple as that."
One of Town's strengths this season has been their defending from set-pieces but this is where Dale got their goal: "It was very disappointing to concede from a set piece and I'm not sure it was a free kick, I think the lads run into Graham Coughlan.
"It was a harsh decision but you still have to defend set pieces properly, the young lad has come on as sub and has got a free header at the far post to score.
"It is disappointing but to say that is the only thing I'm disappointed about papers over the cracks.
"There were a hell of a lot of things that weren't right tonight; we weren't anywhere near good enough to get a result out of this game today."
Shane Cansdell-Sherriff was shown a straight red card in the second half after he pulled back Dagnall.Simmo was asked if he had any problems with the decision but he didn't:"It was just stupid; you wouldn't expect to see something like that on a parks pitch.
"He's got an opportunity to put the ball back into the box but didn't take it and then got into trouble.
"I've said to the players that we need everyone available and when he does something as ridiculous as that it cost you.
"We couldn't actually cope with their movement when they we had 11 men so we had no chance with 10 men."
With Dave Hibbert missing with a groin problem Town went with Jamie Cureton and Jake Robinson upfront. In the end it was a frustrating afternoon for the two with little sight of Fielding's goal: "We didn't create opportunities and I don't think Jamie Cureton and Jake Robinson have had a sniff around their box.
"At set pieces we caused a few problems and we hit the post at the start of the se3cond half.
"If you don't pass the ball or keep it then you are going to create anything and you will struggle."
The defeat sees Town drop out of the play-off places for the first time in a long time. The aim has been for one of the automatic slots and Simmo was asked if he felt this was still achievable: "If we don't win games, we won't get anything.
"We won't get play offs, we won't get automatic, it's a simple as that.
"There are enough games to play to get ourselves involved and I said it a few weeks ago, we talk about getting an automatic but we have to make sure we get in the playoffs as there is no guarantee about that.
"If we go about things like we did last week at Grimsby and today where we don't cope with the opposition then there's no point thinking about play-offs even."
