GT Post Coventry City

Posted on: Wed 28 Jul 2010

Town took on a strong Coventry City side at the Greenhous Meadow and acquitted themselves well against the Championship side.

It was an entertaining game for the 1800 Town fans who warmed to the new look Shrewsbury Town side.It was evident from early on that Town were trying to get the ball down and play it and this lead to some exciting football from the home side.

After the game Town manager Graham Turner spoke to the press and was asked for his thoughts on the game: "I thought it was an excellent work out and it's nice to get on a decent surface to play on.

"It has a bit of pace on it, we were playing against good opposition in Coventry and I feel it was a good work out.

"It was full of promise from our point of view but we didn't quite deliver the killer punch that we should have done.

"There was plenty of good movement out, plenty of endeavour, some good defending as Chris Neal had very little to do.

"We probably had the better of the chances and with the penalty miss we should have probably won it.

"The result is not that important, even though winning is a good habit to get into, the quality of play, the fitness of the players and the movement were the important things this evening and I feel the players came out of it very well."

GT was asked how he felt his squad was beginning to develop since he took charge of the Town managerial hot seat: "We are developing quite a reasonable squad and I feel the players who came on added to it.

"When you have the likes of Lewis Neal, Shane, Benji and Dean Holden it's looking quite promising.

"Then with Tom Bradshaw upfront he is an enigma, he's got that real knack of scoring goals and could be a real asset to us."

Since taking over the manager has brought in a number of new faces to strengthen the side and he believes the new additions are fitting in nicely: "I think one of the good things about the Devon trip was that we had the opportunity to get them together and get some understanding in the training sessions.

"They are intelligent players who have played at a higher level and they showed that they can cope with things very well.

"You look at the quality of the Coventry team and I think we played well as a team, not just defended well but the whole of the sided did well."

The focus now switches to the final pre-season game on Saturday at home to Tranmere Rovers and then the start of the new npower season.GT is looking at add a few more faces before the weekend to give the squad that little bit more depth: "I would like to think we will get 3 or 4 players in before the weekend and I think that will give us a squad which will give us the opportunity to make us contenders for promotion this season.

"There has been a lot of work going on behind the scenes for a while, and some have dragged on, but I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will come to fruition.

"These will hopefully be permanent moves, we obviously need a goalkeeper, we are short of experience in the back four in the middle, and central midfield players."
