Shrewsbury Town put their recent poor cup form to bed with a superb 4-3 win over Charlton Athletic in an excellent game at the Greenhous Meadow.

It looked to be an uphill task for Town after they had gone 3-0 down midway through the first half but the home side hit back.Goals from Jake Robinson and Matt Harrold made things look a lot brighter at the break.

In the second half the game continued to pulsate but it was Town who grabbed the goals, first a header from Daniel O'Donnell and then Matt Harrold popped up with his second and the match winner for Town.

Town will now be looking forward to seeing their name in the hat for the second round for the first time in a number of years.

After the game manager Graham Turner was asked for his thoughts on the evening's game:"I thought it was a travesty that we were 1-0 down to be honest let alone 3-0 down.

"We started the game quite well and passed it and created good opportunities without any real clear cut chances coming from them.

"We were having a lot of the ball but then with one big ball over the top we were 1-0 down.

"We then slipped up and conceded other goals but generally the performance wasn't bad.

"I felt there was a strong belief in the side that we could get back into it but we needed a break and Jake Robinson gave us that.

"The goal before half-time was crucial because that got the dressing room at half-time buoyant and we felt then that we could go on and win the game."

Town haven't had a good Carling or FA cup run in a number of years but the manager is more concerned that his side continue to build a winning mentality: "I think the important thing is a winning mentality and you need that in the club whether its cup ties or league matches.

"That mentality spreads and you can get that belief in the dressing room if you continue to win games and from tonight's game and last Saturdays that belief is hopefully growing.

"A decent cup run would be very welcome and another home draw against a big club would be welcome."

The goals in the game were spread around the side but it was good to see Matt Harrold and Daniel O'Donnell opening their accounts for Town: "Daniel popped up with a good powerful header and then Matt Harrold got the winner with a nicely placed header.

"It was good for him as he's worked hard in the two games without the goals reward that strikers need.

"He's off the mark now and there is a lot to come from Matt now as he works extremely hard for the team."

The confidence in the squad continues to grow but the manager is challenging his side to stay focused: "It's now about getting back down to earth as you usually get a backlash when you get results like this.

"We need to make sure that we are ready for Macclesfield on Saturday and that we don't get carried away by anything that had gone on tonight."

The Town defence will be disappointed in the manner of the Charlton goals but the manager isn't too concerned about that.He knows there is time to work on ironing out a few things but on the night the important thing is that Town will be in the next round:"There will be other occasions when the defence will earn us points.

"It wasn't their night tonight but they were playing against some very good forwards.

"We can put that right but it is not something that I am unduly worried about as we can work on it.

"What I am pleased with is that we are in the hat for the next round of the Carling Cup."
