Paul Simpson is forced to make a change as Kelvin Langmead has a sore knee which means he misses his first league game of the season. Marc Pugh drops from the squad while Asa Hall drops to the bench, in comes Andy Cooke, Luke Jones and new loanie Michael Barnes comes in for his debut.

Town had all of the attacking play in the first 5-minute as they took the game to the visitors, the best move saw some quick passing that saw Andy Cooke back heal it to Dave Hibbert who flashed a shot just over the bar. The front pairing of Hibbert and Cooke were combining well to cause the Bury defence a lot of problems early on.

With 15-minutes on the clock it was still all Town on the attack, Barnes down the right was the one who was seeing a lot of the ball and he was pulling Bury defenders out of position and this was giving Cooke and Hibbert the space to get in some decent efforts on goal.

Dave Hibbert was the first player into ref Singh's book after he caught Ben Futcher marginally late, Futcher stayed down a little theatrically and this brought calls of 'off off' from the Bury faithful but when it had all calmed down he produced a yellow for Hibbert.

Bury had a great chance to grab the lead when Elliot Bennett threaded a great ball to put Andy Bishop way from Lee, he was in on goal one on one with Garner but the Town stopper kept his nerve to put in an important block to deny on form Bishop.

It was still the home side who were having the lion's share of the attacking play but they were unable to breach the Bury defence. Leslie was beginning to see more of the ball and this was allowing Town to comfortably break down both the flanks.

Town were getting a lot of set-pieces around the Bury area but weren't really hurting the visitors from the corners and free-kick. The best though was when Ben Davies whipped in a low delivery that Andy Cooke connected with well but his header was straight at Randolph in the Bury goal.

Town were caught sleeping when Bury got a free-kick about 30 yards from goal, the Benn took the free-kick quickly to find Adam Rooney free in space behind the defence, he hooked a shot in but luckily for Town it was just wide of the target. Bury had another great chance to grab the lead moments later when Nicky Adams spun the Town defence and was in on goal but Garner was out quickly to slide at his feet to snuff out the danger.

Half-time: 0-0

The first point of note of the half was a yellow card a piece for Andy Cooke and David Buchanan, the ball had gone out and Cooke tried to take a quick throw but Buchanan wouldn't release it and then followed a bit of pushing and shoving between the two that ref Singh saw worthy of a booking for each.

There was a hairy moment for Graeme Lee when Elliott Bennett picked up the ball and broke into space that had appeared between the Town defence, he was powering in on goal with the Town defenders running to get back when Lee stuck in a leg to nick the ball away but sent Bennett flying with the Bury fans once again calling for the red, with Herd and Jones back with Lee ref Singh took the right decision to produce just the yellow for Lee.

Town's best chance came after Kevin McIntyre threaded a superb ball through the Bury defence to put Dave Hibbert in on goal, he was coming in on the angle but just as he was about to shoot Efe Sodje slide in to do enough to make Hibbert skew his shot over the target.

With quarter of an hour of the half gone Town were starting to put more pressure on as an attacking force. They were seeing more of the ball around the Bury box but the visitors defence, and in particular the impressive Sodje, were keeping Town at bay.

On 63-minutes Paul Simpson made his first change of the game brining on Chris Humphrey to replace Steve Leslie, Humphrey went onto the right while Michael Barnes came over onto the left wing.

With just under 20-minutes of the game remaining Bury grabbed the lead, the pace of Elliott Bennett took him away after a Town attack broke down, Bennett powered down the pitch and away from Tierney out on the left, he pushed towards the Town goal as they backed off and then drove in an excellent shot from distance that flew over Garner and then hit the underside of the bar and dropped in at the back post.

Town were nearly back on level terms straight away when they had good possession, the ball was crossed to Hibbert at the back and he showed good perseverance to get ball before it went behind, he clipped it to the back post to find Lee who drilled in a shot but it was wide of the target.

Paul Simpson made his second change of the afternoon when he brought off Andy Cooke and replaced him with Guy Madjo.

Town couldn't buy a goal and this was highlighted with 10-minutes remaining when Barnes received the ball out on the left, he cut past his marker and then put the ball back onto his right foot before whipping in a great cross that Hibbert got a flick to but he didn't get enough on it and the ball whizzed wide of the far post.

Bury nearly grabbed a second goal when substitute Richie Barker found himself in behind the Town defence, he drilled in a shot but Garner was equal to it and get a strong fist to smash the ball away and keep Town in the game.

For all the possession that Town were having it was Bury who were looking to more likely to score, they were getting the ball into the better areas as the Town defence time and again backed off to give the visitors space.

Full-time: 0-1
