Town go into tonight's Johnstone Paint Trophy game with a strong looking side as they attempt to get past Accrington to set-up a tie with Bury.
It was a pretty quiet start from both sides and it took until 10 minutes into the game for Town to create the best opening. It came from Lewis Neal breaking down the right, he took the ball down the line before cutting infield, he let the ball run onto his left foot before hitting a great shot towards the top corner but Phil Edwards got a head to it to knock the shot over.
Then it was Stanley's turn to go near and it was straight from Alan Martin's goal kick, he let go a huge kick that had Chris Neal back peddling as the ball dropped and looped up but the bar was there to save Neal's blushes.
It was the home side that was having the better of the chances and Neal had to make a couple of good saves, Stanley's best effort came from Jimmy Ryan who drove in a great shot from 25 yards out that flew just wide of the target.
Chris Neal was having a decent return to the first team and he showed his best on the half-hour mark to keep Stanley out.Martin put another long goal kick downfield but Langmead rose above Symes to head clear, the ball dropped to Gary King who hit a superb dipping volley from 25 yards but Neal was equal to it and did brilliantly to tip the ball over at full stretch.
Town looked to finish the half with a little flurry and tried to put some pressure onto the Stanley goal. Some good work down the left hand side saw the impressive Leslie win a corner, while down the right Lewis Neal was still causing problems when he ran at the Stanley defence.
Half-time: 0-0
Town got off to a bad start with Stanley taking the lead with a minute on the clock. They were awarded a free-kick that was floated in and headed down by Symes, there was a shot that was blocked but it came back to King who drove in a good shot that flew past Neal to give Stanley the lead.
Things got worse for Town 5 minutes later when Stanley added to their lead, the ball was driven in from the right hand side and flew across the Town goal to find Dean Winnard, he hit a first time shot which flew into the goal to make it 2-0 to Stanley.
With 56 minutes on the clock Paul Simpson made his first changes of the night, bringing on Will Richards for his first team debut in place of Joss Labadie and Andre Gray onto replace Kris Bright.
Town showed a bit more attacking danger after the changes with Andre Gray going close and forcing a corner. From that Town went close with a shot that flew just wide and then from a long range Lewis Neal shot. But the best chance came after Andre Gray got in behind the Stanley defence, he nicked a shot in which Martin did well to save but Elder should have hit the target when he latched onto the loose ball.
Stanley were happy with their two goal lead and were happy to let Town to chase the ball and the game.Neal was hitting a lot of long kicks down field for Gray and Elder to run onto and this was causing the home side a number of problems.Gray was busy and won a number of corners for the visitors but there was no end product in front of goal.
Full-time: 0-2
