Martin Wild reports from the Prostar

For the second successive season, Town fell to non-league opposition in the first round of the FA Cup. Ali Chaaban's 20th minute strike was enough to send the Blue Square outfit into tomorrow's draw. It was a lethargic display by the Town with goal scoring opportunities kept to a minimum.

Paul Simpson shuffles the pack for this first ever FA Cup fixture at the Prostar Stadium. Chris Neal returns in goal after recovering from injury. Harry Hooman comes in at right-back with Joss Labadie being handed a start in midfield, and Jake Robinson steps up from the bench to partner Dave Hibbert up front.

Town's first meaningful attack was halted by the linesman's flag. Lewis Neal threaded through a beautifully weighted ball into the path of Labadie, but the youngster had strayed marginally beyond the last defender. Seventeen minutes had elapsed before this brief moment of excitement with the visitors looking like they were here to contain.

The Londoners appeared to have singled out Hibbert as the one to watch, with central defender Marien Ifura closer to the striker than most men are to their mother-in-laws!

After twenty minutes Shrews fell behind. The man they affectionately refer to as "Ali C" - Ali Chaaban - carried out his pre-match boast that he fancied himself for a goal, by finding the corner of Neal's net with his left boot doing the damage. The small band of Staines followers behind that goal celebrated like they had won the trophy already. But credit to the Blue Square South outfit - they had frustrated the hosts and stung them with the classic sucker-punch.

Robinson tumbled in the box five minutes after the goal, but the referee was very well placed and was indignant to the appeals that came up from the South Standers, and then Louis Wells made his first save keeping out Hibbert's header.

Ten minutes before the break Lewis Neal crossed deep but although Robinson met the ball with a decent climb above Danny Gordon, he failed to keep his effort down and Stained lead remained intact.

A goal for the home side may well change the outcome of this tie, and despite a shot on target from outside the box from Hibbert, that goal looked a long way off with just five minutes of the half remaining, and the Swans looking fairly comfortable.

Half-Time: 0-1

Town made a change at the interval with Kris Bright replacing Robinson, who hadn't enjoyed the greatest of fortunes in the first 45.

Simmo's opposite number - Steve Cordery - as you might expect, stuck with the same XI as Staines looked to preserve their recent run of three straight victories.

Shane Cansdell-Sherriff found himself far enough forward to warm the gloves of Wells as Town started the second -half brighter than they had ended the first. They would certainly need to play at a higher tempo in order to break down the Londoner's stubborn resistance.

Labadie needed lengthy treatment during the build-up which led to the award of a Shrews free-kick five minutes in. Neal's 25-yarder caught the edge of the wall though to frustrate the bulk of the three-and-a-half thousand spectators, but at least Labadie recovered to join the fray.

On the hour, Paul Murray tried his luck from well outside the area and although he found the target, it didn't look enough to worry the keeper, and the ball landed safely in Wells' arms.

Then Staines wasted a passable opportunity to extend their advantage. Chaaban took up a good position in the box, but failed to find two others up in support in even better ones, and the danger passed.

Simpson Senior threw on Simpson Junior with Labadie coming off on 63 minutes, but still the shock remained on the cards for a second successive FA Cup campaign. Salop were definitely out of sorts and a pale imitation of the side which had performed so well in Nottingham seven days ago.

Just over fifteen minutes remained for Shrews to try and rescue the tie, but despite enjoying plenty of possession, they weren't working the ball in the penetrative areas of the field. The non-leaguers looked happy to sit on their lead and few could blame them. Neal - that's Chris, not Lewis - had barely touched the ball all afternoon but the scoreboard away to our right portrayed the gloomy message: SHREWSBURY 0 STAINES TOWN 1.

It should have clicked round to 1-1 but Hibbert's header from a fine Hooman cross went over. The young defender was replaced by Nathan Elder as Simpson went gung-ho for the last stages of the game.

It was the other STFC who should have scored though with ten minutes left. A rare corner was headed back across goal by Ifura, and recently introduced substitute Dean Thomas should have buried his header from six yards out. Thankfully, he missed by the proverbial mile and Shrews slim hopes were kept alive.

The fourth official held up the board to indicate an additional five minutes, but Staines very well organised eleven-man defence were in no mood to surrender their position of Sunday morning headline-makers.

Full-Time: 0-1
