The teamsheets shows that Graham Turner had made the tough decision to recall fit again Lionel Ainsworth and Mark Wright to the starting line-up, with Steve Leslie dropping down to the bench.
There was an early talking point about how the advantage rule is played and how it is interpreted. The ball was swung over into the box for Harrold and Tom Newey to compete, Harrold got the flick on to send the ball wide to Ainsworth but Newey stayed down on the ground, ref Kettle made it clear he was happy to play on so Ainsworth drilled a ball across the goal that Warrington did well to parry. The ball then went dead with the Millers bench and players incensed at the decision to play on.
Moments later Town grabbed the lead following some great work from Craig Disley, he received the ball then drove into the Millers box at the angle, this drew the visitors defence too him before pushing play to the far side to find Ainsworth unmarked and with the goal at his mercy, and he made no mistake driving the ball home to make it 1-0 to Town.
It had turned into an interesting game between two sides that were getting the ball down and looking to attack whenever they could.Town's defence had to be strong as the height and strength of Tom Elliot and the pace and guile of Le Fondre meant they were continually being tested. At the other end Town were causing problems all over the place, the midfield were creating, the defence were supporting and the forwards were testing and probing to add to their early lead.
With the half-hour mark approaching Town were looking the most likely to score and were getting closer and closer to Warrington's goal.Ainsworth and Wright were stretching the Millers over the park and getting some excellent deliveries into the box. There was a great chance to go 2-0 up when Town moved the ball quickly from one side of the box to the other to find Ainsworth, he cut the ball back into the run of McAllister who sent it goal bound with Warrington looking wrong footed but managed to recover and get down quickly to smoother the shot.
Ainsworth was causing problems down the flanks but he was also coming inside when he could to add a different threat to the Millers. The ball was nicely won by Sharps who stuck out a foot to nick it off Le Fondre, he played it into Harrold on the edge of the box who brought it down and played it out to Ainsworth who had drifted inside, he took a touch and then drove in an excellent shot but Warrington was equal too it and pulled off a great save.
Half-time: 1-0
It was pretty much of the same after the restart with both sides continuing to play some good football.Play was switching between the two teams but at times the passages of play were becoming a little disjointed.
The Millers were seeing a bit more of the Town goal and had the ball in the back on the net, but it was chalked off due to an earlier foul on keeper Chris Neal.At the start of that move Le Fondre had a great sight of goal, but Cansdell-Sherriff came across and got in an all important block as Le Fondre smashed the ball goal wards.
For a period the visitors were looking to more likely to find the net and Graham Turner made his first switch of the afternoon brining on Benjamin Van Den Broek to replace Jake Robinson as Town looked to keep the ball in the Millers half a little better.
The game was still a little too open for Town's liking and the Millers were getting closer to nicking a goal back.Le Fondre was starting to shine a cause a lot of problems, he did really well to get in behind the Town defence and drive a low shot in but Chris Neal was equal to it and pulled off an excellent stop.
With 10 minutes of the game remaining Graham Turner made his second substitution of the afternoon brining off Lionel Ainsworth and replacing him with Kevin McIntyre as Town tried to shore things up in the midfield a little more.
Town weren't done as an attacking force and when they got forward the danger was there to see.A good move down the right saw Sadler and Harrold combine to neat passes to set Wright up with a burst into the box, he dinked past one defender before curling in an excellent shot that beat Warrington but flew just wide of the far post.
The game entered 4 minutes of extra time and Rotherham kept the pressure up on the Town goal.the ball seemed to be stuck around the Town box but the home side were digging in and defending for their lives and in the end for the 3 points there deserved.
Full-time: 1-0
