The diggers started work on Town's new 10,000 yesterday and it was great news for the club and all its supporters.

It's also great news for Town manager Gary Peters who has been looking forward to the Gary Petersstart of the project since he took over the managerial reigns at Town: "It was something that was sold to me to join the club and I thought we might be in the new stadium by now.

"That isn't the case and I fully understand the reasons were not in there yet and it's not the fault of the chairman or the board. They've been working do hard to make the stadium happen but there have been hiccups along the way, mainly from the council, planning and other things to make it awkward.

"It's up and running now and helps me as a lot of the players I brought in last season I sold the fact the new stadium would be built.

"I was carrying round plans and pictures of the new stadium in my car when talking to players about coming to the club. Those players thought it was going to happen, so did I and it certainly is now happening.

"Credit must go to the people involved, especially the Chairman and hoe much he's out up with to get to this stage. It's been 9/10 years now and he's had a battle to get to this point and a weaker person may have given in by now but he's stuck at it and it will pay dividends for the club."

With GP building an exciting young Town side the new stadium and facilities will help him to attract more players to Shrewsbury Town: "When you're asking a player to come and join your club your negotiation skills are dependant on how much they want to join you.

"Last year it was hard to get people to join us as the season before we'd been near to relegation and only turned it round at the end of the season, people were aware of that and reluctant to join us as they were unsure if we'd not do the same this season.

"The fact that we had a new ground being built meant I could use that to sell the club to them.

"This season our league position is better and that will help when trying to bring people into the club, the new ground will help us and now we've got things to sell to players who are coming in means they may demand less wages because they will be happier with the facilities and a challenging season trying to get promotion.

"When you move to a new stadium with new facilities there are more income streams that you can draw on, and if we can get in more money then the budget grows and if the budget grows then we can get in better players."

One problem that GP highlighted soon after taking over was the quality of Town's training facilities. This was one of the first things he put right and now the new stadium will add more facilities for Town to train at: "We're getting more and more options down that road now, when I came here the training facilities were poor but they have improved immensely since then.

"Firstly a lot of money has been spent on the training ground and that has meant we have been able to train there through the winter. We've invested not only money on making it better but we've had a full time grounds man there.

"On top of that we've got a local sports village being built at Sundorne which looks like it will be fantastic and is another facility we can call upon.

"We also have a deal over at Telford with TCAT so that we can use their excellent in door dome.

"We've got good training facilities already and the addition of faculties at the new ground is another bonus."
