Kelvin Langmead

Posted on: Sat 01 Sep 2007

Martin Wild caught up with Kelvin Langmead during the post match interviews to get his thoughts the important victory.

Town defender Kelvin Langmead stressed the importance of today's 2-1 victory at Oteley Road following the defeat to fellow promotion hopefuls MK Dons last weekend.

"It was important we got a win today after last Saturday, we under performed and we knew it. We got at them today, they came and wanted a draw. They sat back first half, we had to make sure we broke them down and we did that. Whether or not it was a penalty I don't know but it definitely wasn't me who committed the foul," said the striker turned central defender.

He was certainly fulsome in his praise of the two goalscorers and in particular the high quality of both finishes.

"Both of them were fantastic finishes. I was stood right behind Hibbs and he struck it so sweetly. It was great work from Herdy down the right to pick out Symesy and he did what he does best. They were great goals and it was great to see both our strikers score. They work extremely hard in training on their finishing and they got their rewards today."

Langmead admitted that the latter stages of the game were full of tension with the fourth official adding an extra four minutes onto the ninety.

"We were under the cosh a little bit towards the end but we dug deep and stuck together. That's something we do very well. They found it hard to break us down and that showed as their goal came from a penalty."

After having missed out in the midweek cup defeat to Fulham, Langmead was quick to point out that competition for places kept the squad on their toes.

"It's fantastic for the club that there's loads of competition. Anyone can play and as long as everyone keeps working hard and pulling in the right direction I'm sure we'll do really well this year," he said. "It's a great atmosphere, the fans are fantastic. We enjoy playing here cos the pitch is great and the lads should take some credit that the fans are coming to watch us. If the team you support aren't doing too well you're not necessarily going to go and watch. But cos we're playing well it's showing in the attendances we're getting."

Commenting on the news that Salop had reached the league's summit, Langmead had to delve deep in the memory bank to recall the last time he'd been involved in a team that topped the league.

"Preston North End youth team or maybe back at school I can't remember! I'll look forward to getting home and seeing us top of the league. It will bring new pressure, but a nice pressure being top. It's been a good start, we just had a really disappointing game last week but we've played well in the other three games and just hope we can push on. We worked hard pre-season, all the new additions that have come in have gelled really well and hopefully we can continue this progress."
