PFA 100 Years

Posted on: Mon 03 Dec 2007

A picture showing two Shrewsbury Town Football Club players shaking hands was the focus of a special footballing event last Sunday at the City of Manchester Stadium.

To celebrate 100 years of the Professional Footballers Association a special match was been organised for Sunday where managers Sven Goran Eriksson and Terry Venables will be going head to head managing a Rest of the World XI against an England legends XI.

Shrewsbury Town's Stuart Nicholson and winger Chris Humphrey are seen shaking hands on the front cover of a centenary souvenir book and match day programme, by Shrewsbury photographer Matthew Ashton.

"The idea behind it was to create a real life logo of the Professional Footballers Association, showing two players shaking hands," explained Matthew who worked on the project with designer Jim Lockwood who helped produce the Shrewsbury Town FC coffee table book, Goodbye Gay Meadow.

"The souvenir book is a history of the PFA and Jim put a lot of hard work in researching for it. For all the hard work there was researching pictures and taking studio pictures of some amazing historical items like old medals and Sir Stanley Matthews' football boots, speaking as a Shrewsbury Town fan, I am very happy to say that we got Shrewsbury Town on the front cover!"

The PFA are delighted with the Gordon Taylor has said it is "the best thing they have ever produced."

The game ended with a 3-2 result in favour of the World side but the real winners of this historic fixture will be the sick and needy children of the North West. All the proceeds from this fixture and other events that have run throughout the PFAs Centenary Year will be poured into the One Goal, One Million charity fund.

The trust was established with the specific aim of raising 1 million to build a specialist Rehabilitation Unit at the new Manchester Children's Hospital.
