Town today revealed that they had secured the services on Kevin McIntyre on a 2 ½ year deal after agreeing a fee with Macclesfield that could rise to around £50,000 depending on the clubs performance.

McIntyre joined Macclesfield back in 2004 from Chester City and has gone onto make 149 appearances for the Silkmen while finding the net 17 times.

ShrewsWeb caught up with Kevin after his first training session and we started by asking him how the move came around: "To be honest I've known that Gary has been interested in me as a player for a while now.

"They made a bid for me and once I knew that then I wanted to join Shrewsbury.

"It's a great stadium with a great fan base, I know a few of the lads here and it's a club going places and this is where I want to be."

The team trained on the training pitch at the new stadium this morning and it was the first time that Kevin had trained with his new team mates: "You're always a bit nervous to meet your new team mates but once you've got your first training session out of the way you don't look back.

"I'm just looking forward now to getting into the training sessions and really getting to know the lads."

He joins what is a young Town side and brings nearly 300 League appearances of experience with him. He's looking forward to getting stuck in with his new team and is sure his experience can help the young Town side: "I'm 30 years old but I still think I can give a lot to the team.

"My legs still feel like they are young and that's the important thing that matters.

"They are a young set of lads around me so hopefully I can help them out and they can help me out."

With spells with Doncaster Rovers, Chester City, Macclesfield Town and now Shrewsbury Kevin has a lot of experience of football at this level: "It wasn't that long ago that I was here playing for Macclesfield against Shrewsbury.

"I know this league and the players that we are up against and I'm confident that I can come in and do well."

Town are currently just sitting outside the play-off places and the Liverpool born player is sure that a decent second half of the season will see Town pushing for the automatic promotion slots: "We are not far off the play-offs now so it's just a matter of pushing on in the second half of the season.

"The league position is encouraging now and there is no reason that we can't push on and get automatic promotion never mind the play-offs.

"There are only maybe the top three sides who look consistent but if you look at the league as a whole everyone beats everyone else.

"If a team puts a string of wins together then that wins you right up there and there is no reason we can't do that."

McIntyre played in the midfield and on the left side at Chester and when he moved to Macclesfield he played in their midfield. The last couple of seasons has been him slot in at left0back at Macc but his role at Town is in the midfield, Gary Peters has spoken about Kevin slotting into that centre midfield one and it's one that he is comfortable with: "I played in midfield for Macclesfield when I first joined them as well as at left-back for the last couple of seasons.

"I love to play in the midfield as I can get involved, I like to get a tackle in, get forward and have a shot at goal and I'm made up to be back in midfield as that is me to be fair."

After nearly 4 years and 150 appearances at Mose Rose it was a tough decision for Kevin to leave Macclesfield. In the end he decided that a move to Town was a one he couldn't turn down and is looking forward to the new challenge: "The fans there were brilliant with me at Macclesfield as were the Chairman, Vash the owner and the gaffer as well.

"I was sorry to go but I felt that I needed the change and needed to go to get a new challenge in my life.

"I'm looking forward to that challenge and I'm really glad that it is here at Shrewsbury."

With the move to the new stadium Shrewsbury Town are beginning to become one of the bigger sides in the division. The ambition of the chairman and Gary Peters is there to be seen and was a factor in Kevin's switch to Shropshire: "You look around at the stadium and you can see that there is ambition here.

"I've just met the chairman and by talking to him for 5 minutes you can see he wants the club to move forward.

"I'm pleased that I'm part of that and want to help the club to achieve that progress.

Kevin's career started at Tranmere Rovers as a trainee and he was there about the same time that Town assistant manager John McMahon was there. He knows Macca and as well as a few others from the current Town squad: "I think John McMahon was doing the youth team at Tranmere around the time I left the club.

"Through your time in football you meet people and talk to them and John is great.

"In training he is enthusiastic and that goes through the whole session and I'm really enthusiastic about the future.

"I know Benji (Ben Davies) from Chester, I knew Ashy through playing against him and the way in football where you get to know people. Symesy came on loan to Chester for a little while and know some of the others just through playing.

"I didn't speak to them about the move because as soon as the manager put the deal on the table I wanted to be here as soon as possible."

The aim now is to impress in training on Friday and push for a place in the squad for Saturday but he's not taking anything for granted: "Hopefully I can be involved on Saturday but we will have to wait and see how things pan out."
